Justin Trudeau must have slept like a baby last night. 2019 is no longer the year of living dangerously as far as the Conservative threat to his regency is concerned.

Not only did the social conservatives retain control of the Harper Party, but in Andrew Scheer, the former PM (still thought to be a behind-the-scenes puppet-master by some) likely got the candidate he wanted. At the very least, he did not get an uppity progressive like Michael Chong — who defied him in the days of Harper’s flat-out authoritarianism — or the weak tea of an Erin O’Toole.

Ontario Attorney General and Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi plans to propose a bill this fall that would create safe zones around abortion clinics in the province, citing reports of harassment by a small group of protesters outside a clinic in his riding.

Naqvi made the announcement Monday morning alongside Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Coun. Catherine McKenney, saying laws like this are more important than ever in an increasingly polarized society.

Although abortion is, for the most part, illegal in Jamaica, you are surrounded by women who have had pregnancies terminated. Lawyers, doctors, domestic helpers, nurses, policewomen, teachers, hairdressers. They work in your office, walk past you in supermarket aisles and sit beside you at church.

But many women who have abortions place themselves at risk without even knowing it. This is because shortcuts are often taken, which can cause significant morbidity or even death. I am not encouraging any woman to have an abortion, but the truth is that whether the procedure is legal or not, if a woman is determined not to carry a pregnancy, she will find ways of having it terminated. I am not in the habit of giving advice to people regarding breaking the law, but in this instance, I have placed concern for human safety above political correctness. So, if you have decided that you must terminate a pregnancy, please read this carefully.

New Delhi: The recent incident of a 26-year-old woman dying during a botched up termination of pregnancy has caught the attention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM has sought a report from the Centre on the matter, with a mandate to the Union health ministry to strengthen the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.

The police in March had arrested a homeopath, Dr Babasaheb Khidrapure, who ran an illicit abortion racket in the Mhaisal village, Maharashtra, after the discovery of as many as 19 aborted female foetuses dumped in a sewer.

Public support for abortion in cases of rape and fatal foetal abnormality as outlined in today’s Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI opinion poll will recede once a referendum is called, an anti-abortion group has claimed.

The survey of 1,200 voters carried out earlier this week revealed that 67 per cent of those polled would support access to abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rising to 72 per cent where the woman’s mental health is at serious risk and 76 per cent for cases of rape.

Malawi Government has finally released and gazetted the long awaited Termination of Pregnancy Bill to the general public ending speculation on the whereabouts of the bill.

Discussing abortion law reforms

The report and the Bill has this week been distributed to all 193 members of parliament, Speaker of parliament, libraries, universities, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice and the judiciary.

The Bill is expected to be tabled in this session of parliament.

The poll, by the Irish Times/Ipsos Mori, says an overwhelming majority feel that abortion should be legal on grounds such as pregnancy as a result of rape or when a serious risk is posed to the health of the woman.

The Queensland Government should demonstrate a commitment to women’s health and refer abortion to the state’s Law Reform Commission a coalition of legal, medical and community groups said today.

Sunday 28 May marks the International Day of Action on Women’s Health. The day also signals three months since the government committed to this referral which would be a step towards fully decriminalising abortion in Queensland.

Polish Government limits access to emergency contraception

On May 25th the Polish Government voted in favour of limiting access to emergency contraception violating women’s reproductive rights few months after the “Black Protest”.

The draft proposal was put forward by the ruling Law and Justice party and accepted for further works in February this year. Besides issues focusing on patient’s access to medicines it also aimed to make all contraception, including emergency contraception, available only on prescription from doctor.

242 Members of Parliament voted in favour of this ruling, including all representatives from the Law and Justice party who have a majority in the Parliament, 188 against and 9 abstained from voting. 21 did not attend the session.
