The Government is considering covering the cost of care for women seeking a termination of their pregnancy.
Minister for Health Simon Harris is assessing if services provided under the Maternity and Infant Scheme can be expanded to women who may require an abortion.

Ireland has made history by voting to repeal its ban on abortion. The Yes campaign won with 66.4 percent with all but one of the country's constituencies voting to repeal the Eighth Amendment of the constitution. The result underscores the findings of a recent Pew Research Center report which also put Irish support for abortion at 66 percent.
As can be seen from the following infographic which is based on the report's findings, Ireland's historic vote puts it in line with the rest of Western Europe on support for abortion. Net favourability is strongest in Northern Europe at 94 and 92 percent in Sweden and Denmark respectively. Portugal has the strongest level of opposition at 34 percent.

Conservative party deputy chair James Cleverly has hit out at MPs campaigning for a change in Northern Irish abortion law, accusing Labour of exploiting the issue for party political gain.
Cleverly made his attack despite the fact that at least 13 female Conservative MPs have publicly supported a change to the law in Northern Ireland, which has some of the most restrictive rules on abortion in the world.

The photograph from the Irish referendum that brought me undone was of white-haired men in the street holding a yellow banner. It read “Grandfathers for Yes”. It came across my phone as I traversed Melbourne in the 86 tram only a couple of days before the vote, like a lobbed bomb of hope and love, relief and change. I sobbed aloud.
It struck with specific weight because there’d been another photo circulating a week earlier of Irish men the same age in a sadly more familiar scenario. “Vote NO” read their own pink signs, “Support women, protect babies, save lives.” That one had left me not in hot tears but a cold rage.

Abortion robots will deliver abortion pills to women in Belfast, Northern Ireland on May 31 st. With the robot the abortion pills can be supplied to women Northern Ireland without breaking the law because the robot is operated from the Netherlands. A few days ago Ireland has voted to legalise abortion. Northern Ireland cannot continue to violate women's rights.
The action is a collaboration between Women on Waves, Women on Web and ROSA Northern Ireland to call attention to the restrictive abortion laws and the prosecution of women in Northern Ireland.

A bill setting a 50-metre protester-free zone around the province's two stand-alone abortion clinics passed Wednesday in the Alberta legislature.
The bill passed 45-1 without participation of members from the Official Opposition United Conservative Party.
Irish government to examine NI women's abortion access

The Irish government will examine whether women in Northern Ireland will be able to access abortion services in the Republic of Ireland.
Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Leo Varadkar said he "imagined" current rules would apply where all Irish citizens across the border could avail of health facilities in the south.
Meanwhile the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has called for women in Northern Ireland to be given the same access to abortion as in the rest of the UK.

All eyes were on the Republic of Ireland this weekend when it voted resoundingly in favor of repealing its near-total ban on abortion. In the days since, some of that attention has turned to Northern Ireland, where pressure is mounting to change its own restrictive abortion laws.
Though Northern Ireland is a member of the United Kingdom, where abortions are permitted within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy (and later, under exceptional circumstances), U.K. abortion law doesn’t apply in Northern Ireland. This is because the 1967 Abortion Act that legalized abortion access across the U.K. was never enforced in Northern Ireland, which instead adopted abortion laws similar to those of the Republic of Ireland.

News of the landslide vote to legalise abortions in Ireland this weekend was met with calls for the law to be changed in Northern Ireland too. Sinn Fein’s leaders held up a sign at Dublin Castle reading ‘The North Is Next’, while in London, female ministers put pressure on Theresa May to demonstrate her feminist credentials by backing reform.
This issue, and the continued lack of same sex marriage in Northern Ireland, are finally being recognised by the rest of Britain and Ireland as a serious infringement of rights. While this mainstream discussion is appreciated, we must face the reality.

In a historic referendum on Friday, the Irish electorate voted with a resounding Yes in favour of removing the Eighth Amendment (article 40.3.3) from the Constitution.
Citizens were asked whether or not to replace the Eighth Amendment, which banned abortion in almost all circumstances by recognising the constitutional right to life of the unborn, with a provision enabling the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) to regulate the termination of pregnancy by law.
With a turnout of 64%, all constituencies bar Donegal voted in favour of repealing.
