Abortion: Medical doctors brief religious leaders

A group of medical doctors representing the Health Ministry met with religious leaders of the the Congress of Religions at Sri Sambodhi Maha Viharaya in Colombo yesterday afternoon to explain and discuss about the proposed amendments to abortion laws.

Ven. Ittapana Dhammalankara Mahanayaka Thera, Prof. Ven. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera, Ven. Dr. Akuratiye Nanda Thera, Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thera, Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, Ash Sheikh Fazil Farook of All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) and number of other religious leaders attended the meeting representing the Congress of Religions.

Sri Lanka nabs Indian for smuggling abortion pills worth Rs 2.3 million

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan authorities have arrested an Indian man for allegedly smuggling highly potent abortion pills worth Rs 2.3 million, according to a media report today.

The Indian, who arrived from New Delhi on a SriLankan Airlines flight yesterday, had tried to leave without declaring the huge quantity of the pills, the Colombo Page reported.

Upon inspection, Lanka Customs officers found the illegal medicine stock in his luggage.

The suspect, who was not identified, had visited Sri Lanka on several occasions earlier. He has been buying the medicine from India for a low price and selling it in the country for a large amount of money, the report said.

Sri Lanka’s Fifth State Party Report in relation to its examination of Submission to the Committee against Torture

Background
On 15 November 2016, the Committee Against Torture (CAT), during its 59th session, examined Sri Lanka’s fifth State party report. In October 2016, the Global Justice Center (GJC) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) jointly submitted a shadow report focused on how Sri Lankan law violates the Convention Against Torture by (1) banning abortion in most circumstances, (2) having an antiquated and flawed rape law and (3) by permitting child marriage.

The CAT has established that restrictions to abortion access, especially in cases of rape, incest, fetal unviability and where the health of the woman is at risk, can amount to cruel and inhuman treatment. The CAT has routinely expressed concern about the absence of marital rape provisions and repeatedly found that a widespread and high rate of sexual violence in a country violates the Convention. The CAT has also found that child marriage is a form of ill-treatment.

Continued from last week

Last week we saw how contentious the issue of (induced) abortion is in our country. Well, this is the case to be expected in many countries around the world. As much as the health professionals and activists are willing to see that their proposal to amend the present abortion law will go through the parliament, the religious organisations will not give an inch to upset the apple cart with regard to the present status of abortion law in the country.

Last week, His Lordship Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Fernando of the Catholic Church, in no uncertain terms, remarked that the position of the Catholic Church regarding abortion in fact is even a step ahead of the present Sri Lankan law, and in no circumstance humans have right to end life of another human being, whether it be inside the womb of the mother or outside. Even Ven. Dr. Dambara Amila Thero, senior lecturer in archeology, University of Sri Jayawardenapura held a similar view regarding the subject.

Sri Lanka: Abortion in hot seat, again

The fact that abortion, or properly speaking "induced abortion" according to medical parlance, is always a contentious issue across the world goes without saying. That is what to be expected in a multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural society like ours’, where the views and opinions on matters such as these could be diverse as chalk and cheese. Further, an assortment of concerns ranging from moral, medical, religious and legal to fetal and women’s rights and state’s authority impinge on the matter, thus making abortion one of the most intricate issues of our time. Needless to say, thus arriving at an all embracing consensus on the issue is a near impossibility, if not unrealistic. Naturally, there will be parties on either side of the divide, well armed with sound theoretical and philosophical ordnances, ready to fight tooth and nail to see that their viewpoint prevails at the end of the day. That could be what we are heading toward in the near future with regard to "abortion", which is on the verge of reemergence (after a lapse of two decades).
