Russia's republic of Mordovia has become the country’s first region to outlaw the act of “coercing” women into undergoing abortion, independent media reported.

The regional-level law passed Thursday potentially sets the stage for similar laws across the country.

I refer to Voices writer Zhang Jieqiang’s letter, “Set minimum age for women seeking abortion” (Aug 15).

It noted the existence of a minimum age for sex (16 years old), consuming alcohol (18), buying cigarettes (19), and voting or consenting to marry someone (21).

Based on these facts, the writer argued: “Does it not logically follow that there should be a minimum legal age for abortion?”

One woman told researchers she was tricked by her partner into an illegal and risky abortion. The man suggested some drugs she could use during the pregnancy and how to administer them.

HC directs AIIMS to examine abortion plea

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to form a medical board to decide if the pregnancy of a 15-year-old girlcould be terminated safely. The girl, who is over four months pregnant, said that she wanted to terminate the pregnancy to pursue her studies.

The girl had earlier run away from home and got married. The court directed the AIIMS to submit its report by December 22.
