The European Parliament has voted in favour of including access to abortion in the EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights.

The proposal was approved by 336 votes to 163 against, with support mainly coming from left-wing and centrist members.

Hard-left French MEP Manon Aubry attacked what she called "reactionaries" on the right for voting against the measure.

Malta – Need to reform abortion law – Nils Muižnieks

Need to reform abortion law - Nils Muižnieks

Nils Muižnieks

When I visited Malta last November, I noted how the very restrictive legislation on abortion jeopardised women’s rights. I was also particularly struck by the lack of an open debate about this issue. It is, therefore, encouraging that some voices are now starting to challenge the taboo that still surrounds discussions on abortion. To increase the chances of this debate leading to positive change for all women, it is necessary that discussions be well informed and avoid misconceptions.

Some argue that access to abortion care is not a matter of women’s human rights. Others, in Malta and elsewhere, question whether this is a human right at all.

Malta needs to reform laws against abortion, Council of Europe’s Rights Commissioner insists
New legislation is required to provide abortion care to women who request it

Monday, February 26, 2018

Malta should ensure its ban on abortion does not deprive women of “a range of fundamental human rights”, according to the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner, Nils Muižnieks.

“From a thorough analysis of human rights standards and jurisprudence applicable to Council of Europe Member States, it is clear to me that women’s human rights cannot be protected without ensuring their effective access to safe and legal abortion care,” Mr Muižnieks writes in the Times of Malta.

Should taxpayers fund summer jobs for youth where they will be trained to challenge and oppose the Charter rights of others? Of course not, but it's been going on under our noses for years. Anti-choice groups have been milking the Canada Summer Jobs fund to the tune of $1.7 million since 2010.

The story began in April 2017, when the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) reported that many anti-choice groups had been getting Canada Summer Jobs funding for years -- primarily "crisis pregnancy centres" that dissuade women from abortion, but also some political groups, including Campaign Life Coalition, LifeSiteNews, and Canadian Centre for Bio-ethical Reform (CCBR). The latter group is infamous for its public display of gory signs showing alleged aborted fetuses and delivering similar graphic flyers to residences.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has been urged by Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau to treat the issue of abortion as a fundamental right for women.

Mr Varadkar and Mr Trudeau discussed the subject in a bilateral meeting in Montreal on Sunday, along with Brexit, the EU-Canada trade deal CETA, the healthcare systems of Ireland and Canada, and how international problems should be solved though multilateralism and co-operation.
