Are Abortion Pills Safe? Here’s the Evidence.

More than 100 scientific studies, spanning continents and decades, have examined the effectiveness and safety of mifepristone and misoprostol, the abortion pills that are commonly used in the United States. All conclude that the pills are a safe method for terminating a pregnancy.

In consultation with medical researchers, The New York Times reviewed these 101 studies, which together covered more than 124,000 abortions in the first trimester.

As the Supreme Court's Jan. 22 Roe v. Wade decision turns 46 years old, state legislators across the country are planning more anti-abortion laws. Although supporters of these restrictions may claim that they are medically prudent, designed to protect patient health, the reality is they have no scientific basis.

One of the many types of abortion restrictions spreading across the country is a requirement that abortion providers have admitting privileges at a local hospital or that clinics have transfer agreements with a local hospital. Due to administrative barriers or anti-abortion sentiment, abortion facilities and clinicians often can’t get these admitting privileges. That leads to clinic closures, forcing women to leave the state to obtain an abortion and creating abortion deserts.

Landmark Report Concludes Abortion In U.S. Is Safe

Abortions in the United States are safe and have few complications, according to a landmark new study by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

The report, called "The Safety and Quality of Abortion Care in the United States," examined the four major methods used for abortions — medication, aspiration, dilation and evacuation, and induction — and examined women's care from before they had the procedure through their follow-up care.

States are cracking down on telemedicine abortions, but research argues it's as safe as going to a doctor.

A new study is challenging the premise of laws across the country prohibiting abortions administered through telemedicine.

Nineteen states require a clinician to be present when a woman takes medicine to end her pregnancy in order to keep her safe.

But the new, multi-year study has found that medication abortions are just as safe when they are done with a clinician overseeing them remotely as they are in the physical presence of a doctor.
