Across the nation, women’s access to reproductive care has been protested, shuttered, legislated and sometimes strictly limited. So much so that an international organization has stepped in to provide abortion consultations and medications to women who face high barriers to care.

AidAccess was recently founded by Dutch doctor Rebecca Gomperts to provide American women with access to abortion medication. The contentious program operates online, and offers women consultations and mail-delivered abortion medication.

Labour MP Diana Johnson will today introduce a ten-minute rule bill in the House of Commons that would see abortion decriminalised. Currently, the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861 makes abortion illegal in the UK except when there is a risk to the life or health of the mother, and this legislation was only partly superseded by the Abortion Act 1967. Ahead of tabling the backbench bill, Johnson spoke to LabourList.

Women from Northern Ireland who travel to Britain to terminate a pregnancy may not be able to access abortion pills.

On average, 28 women a week travel from NI to England for a termination because, unlike the rest of the UK, the 1967 Abortion Act does not extend to NI.

England is to allow women to take early abortion pills at home, but patients may have to prove residency.

People in England who are less than ten weeks into pregnancy will soon be able to take the second of two abortion pills at home, rather than making two trips to a clinic to take the medication — a requirement that has proven untenable and dangerous for those who live far from a clinic.

England’s policy on medication abortion will change by the end of 2018, BBC News reports. The announcement was made Saturday.

As landmark women’s health text Our Bodies, Ourselves put it in 1970, abortion is “our right ... as women to control our own bodies. The existence of any abortion laws (however ‘liberal’) denies this right.”

Those rights are advancing in some parts of the UK, and stalling in others. The latest development is that women in England will soon be able to take an abortion pill at home: a small but significant step forward that many welcome. Yet in Northern Ireland, women still face draconian laws and life in prison for daring to access their reproductive rights.

The Scottish government’s decision to allow women to take the abortion pill in their own homes has been upheld following a legal challenge by the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) Scotland.

Doctors welcomed the ruling by the court of session in Edinburgh as “a very significant step forward”, after the anti-abortion campaign group argued that the licensing of the drug misoprostol for home use was “unlawful” and a threat to women’s health and that of their unborn babies.

The government may claim its health service has a commitment to evidence-based treatment, but it is shamefully blind to the evidence when it comes to abortion.

Britain was among the very first countries to allow early medical abortion in hospitals and clinics when it became available more than two decades ago. It now trails behind almost every other country in allowing women to use abortion pills in a sensible, safe and evidence-based way.

Women are illegally taking abortion pills, which they have bought online, at home to avoid enduring abortions on public transport. In England, abortion pills must be administered in a clinic or hospital. For some this means the pill can take effect on their journey home.

Campaigners say women should be able to take the second pill at home, as buying pills online can be dangerous. The Department of Health said it was monitoring the evidence on home use.

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Women in England should be able to take abortion pills at home to avoid the “distressing experience” of suffering pain and heavy bleeding while returning from hospitals and clinics, medical experts said on Monday.

Studies suggest that it is safe for women to take abortion drugs at home instead of in a clinic and allowing them to do so does not increase abortion rates, according to an editorial in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) Sexual & Reproductive Health.
