Battle lines are being drawn ahead of the first real parliamentary debate on proposed abortion reform.

The Abortion Reform Bill went through the formality of a first reading in the House of Keys on Tuesday.

Anti-abortion campaigners displaying graphic banners of aborted foetuses have demonstrated outside the Isle of Man parliament.

In January the final draft of a bill proposing reforms to Manx abortion law will be presented to the House of Keys.

Dr Alex Allinson MHK, who has worked on the Abortion Reform Bill 2017, said the images were "deliberately offensive".

Isle of Man abortion bill: Nearly 3,000 responses submitted in consultation

Nearly 3,000 responses have been submitted in a public consultation into proposed changes to Manx abortion laws.

The draft Abortion Reform Bill 2017 would allow terminations to be carried out in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and loosen restrictions thereafter.

At present, abortions can only be carried out in the Isle of Man if a pregnancy is the result of rape or because of mental health concerns.

Women in the Isle of Man should have the same abortion rights as those in England, Scotland and Wales, a Member of the House of Keys (MHK) says.

Fewer than 10 terminations happen each year on the island because, in most circumstances, its laws prohibit them.

As a result, an estimated 100 women a year seek private abortions in the UK.
