Abortion decriminalized in Sydney after Australian lawmakers overturn 119-year-old law

(CNN)Abortion has now been decriminalized in almost all of Australia after the country's most populous state voted to overturn a 119-year-old law.

On Thursday, lawmakers in New South Wales -- which is home to Sydney -- voted to pass a bill that decriminalizes abortion and makes terminations available to people who are less than 22 weeks pregnant.

NSW parliament has passed laws decriminalising abortion, more than a century after it was included in the state’s criminal code — but the state’s premier was nowhere to be seen in the chamber this morning.

Overnight, the NSW Upper House finally passed the bill and this morning the Lower House approved its amendments.

NSW will become the final state in the country to remove abortion from the Crimes Act after the contentious bill passed its last hurdle on Thursday morning.

The amended bill appeased conservative MPs, securing Premier Gladys Berejiklian's majority which was under threat after rebel MPs warned they could defect.

Abortion has been decriminalised in Australia's most populous state of New South Wales after weeks of contentious debate, bringing its laws into line with the rest of the country.

Politicians from across the political spectrum voted on Thursday to overturn the laws that date back to 1900 and had left women and their doctors at risk of prosecution and a prison term of up to 10 years if an abortion was deemed "unlawful".

The Minister for Women has criticised a radio host's on-air question to the NSW Premier on whether she would personally have an abortion.

Marise Payne told The ABC's Insiders program the question from 2GB host Ben Fordham is "not okay".

"I don't think it's appropriate to ask anyone publicly, male or female, about sensitive health questions like that," she told the panel on Sunday.

The Uniting Church has broken ranks with other religious institutions to throw its support behind decriminalising abortion in New South Wales.

NSW is the only Australian state or territory that has neglected to modernise abortion laws.

Last week a private member’s bill co-sponsored by 15 MPs from across the political divide was introduced to state parliament. It was expected to be debated as soon as Tuesday when parliament sits.
