Despite abortion being on the November ballot in Florida, pro-abortion groups say a six-week ban going into effect next month will have devastating consequences for women in the Southeast.

…Florida, despite its 15-week limit, has been a key point of access to women across the southeastern U.S. living in states that have ceased nearly all abortion services due to bans. At least 14 states have ceased nearly all abortions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, ending federal protections for abortion rights.

Patients, health care providers and clinics were thrust into a new era of reproductive health care access on July 1 when the state’s increased abortion restrictions took effect.

The new North Carolina law limits most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy and requires two in-person appointments for anyone seeking an abortion. Lawmakers added an in-person requirement to receive state-mandated counseling at least 72 hours before an abortion — something that could previously occur by telephone.

As lawmakers in North and South Carolina work to impose new restrictions on abortion, options for women seeking to end a pregnancy in the South are diminishing quickly.

In North Carolina, a ban on abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy goes into effect on July 1. Gov. Roy Cooper had vetoed the legislation, but the state's Republican-led Assembly voted Tuesday to override that veto.

Republican leaders across the U.S. have been on a successful mission to roll back abortion access since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of last year. Abortion is now completely illegal in 12 states, making exceptions only in rare cases, such as the pregnant person’s life being threatened.

People living in areas where abortion is banned have been forced to travel to “abortion-haven” states where access is legal and safely available. But now, states that had once been havens for abortion care are cracking down on access, putting those who had been traveling from neighboring states in a more challenging position.

GREENSBORO — On this Saturday, two groups of people stand watch in the 20-space parking lot of a Japanese steakhouse, each staking out their own territory.

When a car pulls in, often with a woman driving, each group springs to action.

Those wearing rainbow-colored vests motion in the direction of the abortion clinic, guiding drivers to the proper place to park. Others, dressed in navy Sidewalk for Life hoodies, wave, smile and put their hands in a praying position. Some wield signs, such as one reading “God loves you and your baby. We can help.”

Thousands of protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court of the United States on Wednesday as it heard arguments in the most serious legal challenge to Roe vs. Wade in 30 years, sparking passion on both sides of the heated abortion battle.

More demonstrations were expected later Wednesday in what turned into a dramatic scene of dueling rallies as the court considered the most significant abortion rights case in decades.

In clinics in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Kentucky, anti-choice protesters have continued to show up at clinics that provide abortion services, refusing to comply with the pressure for people to practice social distancing and shelter-in-place.

Witnesses have reported protesters gathering in front of clinic doors, walking up to patients, and even “shoving unwanted pamphlets and gift sacks into confused patients’ hands” and through car windows—blatantly ignoring public health recommendations for people to stand six feet apart from one other.
