Harris told of fear over abortion 'barriers' in rural areas

A “sparse” rural abortion service is forcing pregnant women to travel long distances for a termination, pro-choice groups claim. They also describe the mandatory three-day waiting period for an abortion as “a significant barrier” for rural pregnant women.

The 35 pro-choice groups have written to Health Minister Simon Harris to express their “fear and disappointment” that some women are still unable to access timely abortion care.

Gardaí have begun examining CCTV footage at a Longford medical practice, which was vandalised with anti-abortion graffiti in the early hours of Monday.

The facade of the premises was covered in graffiti featuring inflammatory slogans, including referring to the “murder” of “unborn Longford children”.

Update: A Longford councillor has told of the shock and dismay in the town at the vandalism of a local GP’s premises which was covered in anti-abortion graffiti, writes Vivienne Clarke.

“This is a very busy GP practice and it is very distressing for all the patients accessing services today,” Cllr Joe Flaherty told RTE’s News at One.
