When President-elect Joe Biden assumes office on January 20, he will face immediate pressure from reproductive rights advocates to undo many of the harmful measures restricting access to vital health care.

From the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding for abortion, to 2019’s devastating Title X changes, which include a rule that clinics receiving federal money can’t refer patients for abortion care, the list of ruinous policies in need of review is long, and it impacts the lives of millions.

Abortion Media Coverage Is “Deeply, and Problematically, Politicized” Says Study

Throughout the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, anti-abortion advocates have capitalized on the chaos to attack reproductive rights.

Although abortion is time-sensitive, officials throughout the U.S. declared it a nonessential service, denying women the right to reproductive justice under the guise of pandemic control. The move was swiftly condemned by many major medical organizations—but opportunistic attacks on reproductive freedom remain abundant.

The mission of the US Department of Health & Human Services is “to enhance and protect the health and well-being of all Americans,” according to its website. Yet its leader, Alex Azar, seems to believe the mission is to promote anti-abortion values and actions within the health system.

Today, Donald Trump became the first sitting president ever to attend the March for Life — a large anti-abortion gathering that has occurred annually for 47 years — just after his health secretary made a remark that equally showed the government’s commitment to oppose full reproductive rights. In a statement published last night, Azar, who also participated in the event, proudly shared all the moves made by his department to restrict access to abortion, including curtailing Title X funds and pushing back against the provisions of an international right to safe abortion.

Since Trump entered the presidential race in 2015, anti-abortion advocates and lawmakers "have been emboldened with horrific rhetoric that supports a climate of violence against abortion providers," said Erin Matson, co-founder and co-director of Reproaction. "They’re just going for the jugular."

In late October, Pennsylvania state Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R-Clinton County) and state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R-Franklin County) introduced a bill banning abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. During the press conference, Borowicz said the bill could be the “dagger in Roe v. Wade.”

‘Dead Fetus’ Story Coverage Co-opts Language of Anti-Abortion Movement

On Tuesday, an American Airlines cleaning crew at LaGuardia Airport in New York City made what was undoubtedly an unpleasant discovery while cleaning a passenger jet that had flown in the night before from Charlotte, North Carolina: a “wrapped up” “dead fetus” in the toilet of one of the aircraft’s lavatories.

“One of the attendants noticed a large amount of toilet paper in one of the plane’s lavatory toilets,” described a CBS affiliate in Raleigh. “While removing the toilet paper, the cleaner discovered the foot of what appeared to be a fetus, in the toilet.”
