The world has not been successful in reducing inequalities concerning access to sexual and reproductive healthcare, according to a new study by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This is reflected by the fact that the rates of unintended pregnancies and abortions vary widely within the same region and geographies. The income level of a country does not impact these indicators, contrary to general assumptions.

Africa leads in tragic deaths from unsafe abortions – WHO

It stated that more than 60 percent of such deaths occur in Africa, while 30 percent occur in Asia and among those living in the most vulnerable situations.

NEW DELHI: Almost half of pregnancies between 2015 and 2019, worldwide, were unintended, according to a study published in the Lancet Global Health journal. Abortion rates were the highest in low-income countries with most legal restrictions to abortion care, the study pointed out.

The study was a collaboration of Guttmacher Institute and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction.

Websites to reveal how many women buy abortion pills

The health service is working with websites that sell abortion pills to find out how many Irish women are illegally terminating pregnancies.

Women on Web, a website that sells the pills to countries where abortion is restricted, has agreed to share data with the HSE. The health service is also approaching other abortion pill providers with a request to share information.

It is understood that the data will reveal only the number of women buying the drugs and no personal details.

A new study published in the scientific journal, “The Lancet” has just revealed that about 50% of all abortions performed across the world are either illegal or performed in unsafe environments.

Dr. Bela Ganatra, the lead author of this study which was performed over the course of four years (2010 – 2014) discovered that an estimated 55.7 million abortions were performed across the world and about 30 million of those abortions happened in third world countries.

World Health Organisation figures show 25.1 million procedures every year are not safe, with abortion-related deaths highest in west and central Africa

There are nearly 56 million abortions every year in the world and almost half of them are unsafe, according to a major piece of research from the World Health Organisation.

The study found that there were 55.7 million abortions every year between 2010 and 2014 worldwide, and of them 17.1 million were unsafe because the woman was taking pills alone or was with a trained helper but using a method of abortion that is no longer considered best practice.
