In the spring of 2016, Erika Christensen and her husband walked past a tall, wooden fence that obscured the Boulder office of Dr. Warren Hern from the street and into his waiting room.
Printed signs taped to bulletproof glass told her all electronic devices — even cellphones — were prohibited and asked her to tell someone on staff if she needed to leave for any reason. The only items she could carry through the door were a printed book, her identification card and a check for $10,000.

Abortion rights foes in Colorado hope to force an initiative on next year’s ballot that would shut down the state’s only clinic specializing in later abortion care.
The initiative, which has to clear a series of hurdles before it can appear on the 2020 ballot, would make it “unlawful for any person to intentionally or recklessly perform or attempt to perform an abortion if the probable gestational age of the fetus is at least 22 weeks,” but pro-choice activists say the ballot measure could ban abortion completely.

The Pennsylvania Democrat has been pelted with criticism and demands for his resignation from his state House seat in the days since he posted a video of himself aggressively confronting an anti-abortion protester outside a Planned Parenthood clinic. “An old white lady telling people what to do with their bodies? Shame on you!” Sims shouts at the woman in a clip he live-streamed on Periscope. “Push back against Planned Parenthood protesters, PLEASE!” Sims wrote in a message accompanying the video.

Rachel was 25 weeks pregnant when she learned her fetus had a severe, likely lethal abnormality that also put her health at risk. She had to drive 12 hours and pay $10,000 to get a potentially life-saving abortion.
In the fall of 2015, Rachel Goldberg was pregnant with her first child. She and her husband, who live in rural Missouri, were ecstatic about the prospect of starting a family, and she recalls eagerly anticipating her routine 20-week ultrasound check-up. She was excited to find out the sex—male, she would later learn—and she was hoping to get some photos to show her family and friends.
