PRO-CHOICE campaigners have backed calls for Ireland's new abortion laws to be named after Savita Halappanavar, the expectant mother who died after being refused a termination.

The Together for Yes coalition said the gesture would recognise the "great debt" the Irish people owed to Savita, the 31-year-old Indian dentist who died in a Galway hospital after doctors refused to perform an abortion as she miscarried.

Women who choose to have an abortion when they are informed their baby will not survive outside the womb are abandoned by the State, the master of the National Maternity Hospital, Holles Street, has said.

Speaking at the launch of Labour’s campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment, Dr Rhona O’Mahony said the State’s current abortion regime was hypocritical towards women who travelled abroad for a termination when they learned of a fatal foetal abnormality.

Abortion is a reality for women living in Ireland and is an issue that is not going to go away, Minister for Health Simon Harris has said.

“Ultimately, there is always a deeply personal, private story behind each individual case which I believe is a matter for a woman and her doctor. I believe the Irish people trust women and they trust doctors to make these difficult decisions.”

Ireland: Delay in reforming abortion advice clinics is inexcusable

Delay in reforming abortion advice clinics is inexcusable

Those on both sides of the issue can agree that lying to women is abuse. So why won’t Simon Harris update the law?
The abortion debate provokes strong emotions and arguments. We all recognise that and I hope we do our best to respect differences of opinion.

But there are some ground rules I thought we had all agreed on a long time ago.
One is that debate should be based on fact, not fiction. Another is that women in crisis pregnancies are entitled to support, information
and non-judgmental counselling if they want it.

Labour leader Brendan Howlin has said that while bishops have a right to express their opinion on the issue of abortion, their view is only equal to that of any citizen in the country.

His party favours access to abortion in cases of rape, incest, fatal fetal abnormality and instances where the mother’s health is at risk, said Mr Howlin.

His comments follow remarks by Archbishop Eamon Martin, who said that the taking of a life, whatever that stage in life, is “gravely morally wrong”.

Mr Howlin said that abortion and the eighth amendment was not a “black and white issue”.
