There were heated exchanges as TDs debated proposed changes to the State’s abortion legislation on Wednesday but Minister for Health Simon Harris has not yet accepted any of the 145 amendments considered.

The Oireachtas Health Committee concluded its second day of debate on the 180 proposed amendments to the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018.

The Oireachtas Select Committee on Health has concluded its first day of deliberation over amendments to the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

The Committee has concluded ten sections out of 26 sections, in which there are 180 amendments.

So far the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has not accepted any changes in the legislation.

A number of deputies who campaigned for a No vote in the recent abortion referendum have accused the Minister for Health of failing to engage meaningfully with them over the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

Independent deputies Mattie McGrath, Michael Collins, Carol Nolan, Peter Fitzpatrick and Danny Healy-Rae said that while the public voted to remove the Eighth Amendment from the Constitution, they did not vote in favour of the Bill in its current form.

DISCIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS ARE to be initiated against Sinn Féin’s Peadar Tóibín, who broke ranks with his party’s policy by voting against the abortion legislation in the Dáil today.

As indicated by Sinn Féin party leader Mary Lou McDonald in April, Tóibín could face suspension from the party.

Sinn Féin has called on the Government to ensure legislation to allow for abortion in certain circumstances is introduced by early autumn, if the Eighth Amendment is removed from the Constitution.

The party formally launched its campaign to repeal Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution yesterday and insisted it would canvass in every county for a Yes vote.

The headline in the Irish Examiner confirmed that all was not well in Cork. “Coveney plan for legal lock in tatters,” the newspaper declared on Wednesday as the tanaiste, a local TD, made the news for the third day running.

“Tanaiste Simon Coveney has been left humiliated after his two-thirds Dail majority legal-lock plan for the government’s post-referendum abortion law was labelled unconstitutional, naive and deeply damaging to the ‘yes’ campaign,” the Examiner railed.

A SENIOR Sinn Féin TD has said he doesn’t see how abortions can be provided in cases of rape unless unrestricted terminations up to 12 weeks are allowed.

Sinn Féin does not currently support the proposal to allow abortions up to 12 weeks.

The measure was suggested by the Oireachtas Committee due to the difficulty of legislating for cases of rape and incest.

Sinn Féin TDs who oppose the party's position on abortion face the prospect of disciplinary action, its new leader Mary Lou McDonald has said.

Two of its TDs, Peadar Tóibín and Carol Nolan, are against repealing the Eighth Amendment and legislation that would allow unrestricted abortions 12 weeks into a pregnancy. While Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are allowing free votes for their TDs, Ms McDonald said Sinn Féin TDs will be expected to comply with the party's position or face disciplinary procedures.
