The country is still reeling from the death of human’s right defender Caroline Mwatha following a botched abortion at New Njiru Community Center in Dandora.
According to Peter Ndegwa, an independent pathologist, the activist died as a result of excessive bleeding from a ruptured uterus. Mwatha had a five to six month old male foetus that was badly mutilated.

NAIROBI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The death of a Kenyan activist due a botched abortion spotlights how thousands of pregnant women and girls are being driven by social stigma and restrictive policies to lose their lives in backstreet clinics, human rights campaigners said on Friday.
Caroline Mwatha disappeared on Feb. 6 in Dandora, a poor neighborhood in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, where she lived and campaigned against the abusive treatment of people in police custody, raising alarm among rights groups.

As she writhed in pain due to the unsafe abortion that she had undergone, Ms Carol Mwatha did not stop assuring her alleged lover Alexander Gitau Gikonya that she loved him.
In text messages shared between the two lovers and which detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) believe will assist in the investigations, Ms Mwatha clearly explains that she was five months pregnant by Tuesday last week.

Autopsy finds Kenyan right activist died from bad abortion

NAIROBI, Kenya — An autopsy shows that a Kenyan rights activist, missing for six days before her body was discovered in a city morgue, died from a botched abortion.
Many had feared that Caroline Mwatha’s disappearance and death had to do with her work at the Dandora Social Justice Center which has been documenting illegal police killings and other violations.
Dr. Peter Muriuki, who conducted the autopsy for Mwatha’s family, said she died of excessive bleeding both internally and externally. He said it was a result of a medical intervention removing the fetus.
Police asked a court Thursday to hold six people for 14 days to investigate Mwatha’s death. They include the owner of the clinic where she died. Abortion is illegal in Kenya unless it’s an emergency to save the mother.

A clinic said to have facilitated a botched abortion on human rights activist Caroline Mwatha in Dandora, Nairobi is not registered, Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) has revealed.
KMPDB chief executive Daniel Yumbya said government officials will visit the clinic for inspection on Wednesday.
