Abortion rights group brings complaint to Human Rights Group over 'discriminatory' laws

Abortion Rights Aotearoa (ALRANZ) has lodged a complaint to the Human Rights Commission over New Zealand's Abortion laws.
The group said last night in a statement that it believes New Zealand's abortion law discriminates against women and pregnant people on the basis of sex.

But with abortion still in the Crimes Act and other people getting to decide whether pregnant people can terminate, we really have no reason to feel safe. Today is International Safe Abortion Day. It's a day when we celebrate those places where abortion is safe, legal, and accessible, and mourn those places where pregnant people still have to get abortion medications over the internet, risk their lives sourcing abortions outside the health system, or face unfounded prosecutions when they miscarry spontaneously.

Erica never wanted children.
Certainly not aged 22, on minimum wage as a waitress, regularly binge-drinking alcohol, and without a partner.
But the Auckland woman discovered when she was 18 weeks along that she was pregnant.
She tried to get an abortion but says she was told it was too late.

Antiquated abortion law a $20 million ‘box ticking exercise’

The decriminalisation of abortion in New Zealand will save the taxpayer millions, a leading doctor says.
The Government has forked out more than $20 million since 2012 paying specialist doctors to sign off on abortions.
But one specialist has called the process “cruel”, and says a 40-year-old law necessitating the exercise needs to change.
Under the Crimes Act, it is illegal for a woman to have an abortion in New Zealand unless it has been approved by two highly-paid specialist doctors, called certifying consultants.

Certifying consultant comes out in support of abortion rights

A certifying consultant, Dr Helen Paterson, has told the Abortion Supervisory Committee she now supports abortion rights, the Abortion Law Reform Association of New Zealand says.
Dr Paterson’s disclosure challenges s 30(5) of the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act 1977, which directs the Abortion Supervisory Committee not to appoint certifying consultants who believe abortion should be a matter between a patient and their doctor.
ALRANZ National President Terry Bellamak says Dr Paterson is now a member of ALRANZ.
