State Democrats are leading on abortion policy. D.C. Democrats don’t want to get left behind.

Democrats in Washington want to show voters they're working on abortion rights ahead of the 2024 election, with most of the action in the states.

WASHINGTON — After several successful state efforts to codify abortion access, Democrats are marking the 51st anniversary of the defunct Roe v. Wade ruling with an all-out reproductive freedom campaign — in an election year when abortion rights could once again help determine the balance of power in Washington.

Senate Democrats held a briefing on abortion access Wednesday focusing on the impact of state abortion bans. More than half of the Democratic caucus, including Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, heard from and questioned medical professionals and experts.

Democrats condemn ‘cruel’ abortion bans ahead of 51st anniversary of Roe

‘Extreme’ Republican-backed bans have caused untold ‘suffering’ for women, senators say, and vow to restore federal abortion rights

Senate Democrats underscored their commitment to abortion rights in a press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the 51st anniversary of Roe v Wade. The now-overturned supreme court case provided American women with a constitutional right to abortion for nearly 50 years.

Experts at the briefing described Republican-backed abortion bans across the country as “cruel”, “extreme” and causing untold “suffering” for American women, thousands of whom are forced to travel across state lines for abortions or be forced to remain pregnant.

Republican-controlled House pushes for new abortion restrictions

Bills not expected to advance in Senate but underscore Republican majority’s legislative priorities ahead of 2024 election

The Republican-led House on Wednesday pressed ahead with a pair of anti-abortion measures, despite warning signs that the issue had galvanized the opposition in the wake of the supreme court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade last year.

Voting mostly along party lines, Republicans first approved a bill that would compel doctors to provide care for an infant who survives an attempted abortion – an occurrence that is exceedingly rare.

Senate blocks bill to codify right to abortion

Women’s Health Protection Act failed as expected, but Democrats say the move is about mobilizing voters, not passing legislation

By Mike DeBonis and Rachel Roubein , Washington Post

The Senate on Wednesday did not advance legislation that would write a constitutional right to abortion into federal law — a symbolic gesture that Democrats cast as a first step in a larger strategy to mobilize Americans around reproductive rights as the Supreme Court considers overturning Roe v. Wade and related decisions.

Wednesday’s vote was 51 to 49 and well short
of the 60 votes necessary under Senate rules. It was largely a reprise of a
failed February vote staged by Senate Democratic leaders, but the issue has new
resonance after last week’s leak of a draft opinion from Justice Samuel A.
Alito Jr. suggesting that the high court is poised to overturn Roe and curtail
guaranteed nationwide access to abortions.

The Supreme Court abortion leak has already transformed politics all over America

Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN
Tue May 10, 2022

(CNN)In just a week, the leaked draft Supreme Court opinion that could overturn Roe v. Wade has transformed US politics.

Every major politician with power in the country, and those striving for it, are facing sudden, profound and sometimes treacherous questions over abortion ahead of the Supreme Court's final ruling, which could differ from the draft. Some also sense huge political opportunities.

USA – Dems, despite their control, all but concede on federal abortion spending

After months of tense negotiations, the two parties joined together last week on a government spending framework they insist will swiftly lead to a massive deal to boost agency bottom lines into the fall.

Though Democrats won’t publicly admit it, they’re soon set to concede defeat on federal funding for abortion.

After months of tense negotiations, the two parties joined together last week on a government spending framework they insist will swiftly lead to a massive deal to boost agency bottom lines into the fall. Officially, they’re agreeing to save specific policy disputes for later, including the longtime debate over the half-century ban on federal funding for abortions, known as the Hyde amendment. But Republicans are already declaring victory in that battle.

Abortion: Will the US Supreme Court overturn Roe v Wade in 2022?

The court’s conservative majority appears ready to roll back abortion rights, setting up a contentious political battle.

By William Roberts
27 Dec 2021

Washington, DC – For decades, the conservative right in the United States has been campaigning to overturn the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe v Wade, which affirms a woman’s right to have an abortion.

The movement, embraced by the Republican Party and fuelled by evangelical Christians, has pushed to elect conservative legislators at the state and federal levels, and advanced the placement of conservative justices on the US Supreme Court. Now, the anti-abortion rights forces in the US are on the verge of a significant legal victory.

USA – Memo to Chuck Schumer: Stop Dithering and Start Fighting. Now.

Memo to Chuck Schumer: Stop Dithering and Start Fighting. Now.

Jodi Jacobson

I have some questions for Chuck Schumer.

Senator Schumer: You seem to be treating the nomination of a second Supreme Court justice by Donald Trump as business as usual. But it is not. Nothing is usual. Nothing is normal. What don’t you understand about this?

What don’t you get about the fact that Trump is under federal investigation and possibly facing criminal charges? Or that he has actually suggested he can pardon himself?
