N. Ireland – Abortion: PSNI investigate safe access zone protest law breaches

The police are investigating up to 50 potential breaches of laws providing safe access zones (SAZs) outside abortion clinics in Northern Ireland. The zones came into effect in September at eight clinics in Northern Ireland.

More incidents were reported at Causeway Hospital in Coleraine than any other site, police figures show. That has prompted pro-choice campaigners and some local politicians to call for the zones to be extended by up to 250m (820ft).

Abortion: Assembly rejects recent changes to NI laws

The NI Assembly has voted to pass a motion to reject recent changes to abortion laws in Northern Ireland. New abortion regulations drawn up by Westminster came into force in March after a vote in 2019.

The motion, brought by the DUP, passed by 46 votes to 40. The vote has no effect on the laws but the DUP said it would send a message to Westminster that the regulations are not supported by Stormont.

Report on Northern Ireland’s ban on abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality ‘may not be made public’

A much anticipated report examining Northern Ireland's ban on abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality (FFA) may not be made public.

Justice Minister Claire Sugden appeared to cast doubt over the move when she told MLAs the decision would require full Executive approval.

She said: "The report was never intended to be for publication to the general public. It was to inform both myself and the Health Minister and then we would have discussions with the wider Executive.

"That's not to say we won't publish the report."
