Andorra: Activist on trial for raising concerns about total abortion ban at UN meeting

Abortion rights activist, Vanessa Mendoza Cortés, should have never been charged with a crime or put on trial for defending human rights, said Amnesty International, the Center for Reproductive Rights and Women’s Link ahead of her defamation trial on Monday.

Vanessa Mendoza Cortés, President of Stop Violence (Stop Violències), a civil society organisation, was charged with criminal defamation after voicing concerns about Andorra’s total abortion ban at a meeting of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) to examine the country’s record on women’s rights in 2019.

Poland should guarantee access to safe, legal abortion, says human rights commissioner

The European Parliament is set to approve a resolution condemning Poland’s near-total ban on abortion.

The Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights on Wednesday called on Poland to restore access to abortion by fulfilling its international and European legal obligations.

In October 2020, Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled women can terminate their pregnancies only in cases of rape or incest, or if their life is in danger.

International concerns about women’s rights backsliding in Poland

Letter of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister of Poland, the Commissioner refers to recent developments affecting the independence of the judiciary; women’s access to sexual and reproductive rights; the deteriorating environment for NGOs active in the area of women’s rights and assistance to victims of domestic violence; and attacks against the independence and effectiveness of the Ombudsman.

Regarding women’s rights, the Commissioner regrets that new barriers are being created to hinder women’s access to comprehensive sexuality education, emergency contraception and abortion care. He urges the authorities to repeal any retrogressive laws and to reject any legislative or policy proposals which would weaken women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.
