In a dark, nondescript room, the walls caked in spots and smears whose origins she would rather not think about, a young girl sits wringing her hands, waiting for the woman she had been told could help her. She takes one deep breath after another, telling herself it will be okay, there is no other option, she has to be there.

Eventually the door slowly starts to open, bathing the room in light that does nothing other than illuminate the dilapidated hospital bed in the corner.

HARARE - Health facilities that are meant to offer post-abortion care in the country are experiencing shortages of essential drugs required to provide for the service.

Research conducted by Tsungai Chipato of the University of Zimbabwe's Obstetrics and Gynaecology, in conjunction with Guttmacher Institute, the ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) and the Women's Action Group showed that 5 percent of the health facilities had run out of misoprostol - an essential medicine for post-abortion care.

Policy makers in the country are being confronted by the harsh reality of the staggering cost of treating unsafe abortions in Kenya.

According to a research by the Ministry of Health which was published in February 2018, the treatment of unsafe abortion complications cost the public health system a total of Ksh 432.7 million approximately 5.1 million US Dollars in health personnel salaries and medical supplies.
