USA – Not Just Abortion: How Criminalization of Pregnancy Also Impacts Miscarriage Care

Abortion and the management of pregnancy loss, combined with the risk posed by criminalization of adverse pregnancy outcomes, only hurts pregnant people

Dec 3, 2021
Caroline Reilly, Rewire News.

“She gave me the pills—I think about this all the time—in an unmarked manila envelope and told me what to do with them when I got home,” said Kate, who received misoprostol for a missed miscarriage in the first trimester of her pregnancy in 2017. At her ten-week checkup, she had a negative pregnancy test. At an ultrasound appointment a few days later, her doctor explained it was a blighted ovum, a miscarriage of an embryo that had stopped developing.

Leana S. Wen is an emergency physician and the president and chief executive of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The turkey sandwich I always had for lunch tasted different. My colleague’s perfume was suddenly overpowering. I could hardly keep awake; when I slept, I had leg cramps and vivid dreams.

I knew before I took the test: I was pregnant.

'I’m an OB/GYN - All Abortions Should Be Legal. No Exceptions.'
Does a woman need to be on her death bed for her to be given the right to abort her pregnancy?

By Jennifer Gunter, MD, OB/GYN, as told to Tiffany Ayuda

Like a huge tide, there's a wave of Republican-led states that are enacting anti-abortion laws, and it's hurting women in many ways that we don't realize. From Georgia and Ohio's abortion bans that end access at six weeks to Alabama's almost complete ban, women are being marginalized more than ever. As a physician and gynecologist who has performed abortions and pre-term deliveries, it's terrifying to see how lawmakers are passing bills left and right on what women and gender minorities can and can't do with their bodies. And while not all of these laws have taken effect yet, they pose a serious risk to reproductive rights and add fuel to the pro-life side's efforts to strike down Roe v. Wade, which legalizes abortions nationwide.

At 74, I am well past the age of worry about an unwanted pregnancy. In many ways, the bad old days before Roe v. Wade have faded from our collective memory. Women of my generation have rarely told our stories of illegal abortions, perhaps because we are embarrassed. But our reticence has prevented others from learning from experiences like mine.

I never expected that we would go back to illegal abortions, but current legislative actions in a number of states have opened up that possibility.

Guatemalan congress to debate contradicting abortion bills

Guatemalan congress to debate contradicting abortion bills

04 September 2018

Guatemalan legislators are to start a confusing debate on Tuesday over two bills proposing changes to the country's strict abortion laws: one looking to loosen them and the other to toughen them.

Currently, abortion is only allowed in the conservative Catholic-majority Central American country if a mother's life is in danger.

A bill sponsored by the leftist Convergencia opposition party wants to expand that to allow underage girls that have been the victims of sexual abuse to abort in the first 12 weeks.
