Missouri lawmaker seeks to stop residents from obtaining abortions out of state

The measure could signal a new strategy by the antiabortion movement to extend its influence beyond the GOP-led states poised to enact tighter restrictions if the Supreme Court weakens its landmark precedent upholding abortion rights.

The pattern emerges whenever a Republican-led state imposes new restrictions on abortion: People seeking the procedure cross state lines to find treatment in places with less-restrictive laws.

Now, a prominent antiabortion lawmaker in Missouri, from where thousands of residents have traveled to next-door Illinois to receive abortions since Missouri passed one of the country’s strictest abortion laws in 2019, believes she has found a solution.

What if it’s Illegal for a Minor to Cross State Lines to Get an Abortion?

There are only 13 states in the U.S. where it is possible for a minor to obtain an abortion without either notifying or explicitly receiving permission from either one or both parents. For those who get pregnant in such states there is the option of continuing the pregnancy, finding a judge who may be willing to grant a judicial bypass so they can get an abortion without parental involvement, or they can travel to one of the few states that allows minors unrestricted access to abortion services.

However, if Congressional Republicans have their way, that final option may soon be off the table.

Half slave and half free. The last time the United States split into two countries, it didn’t work out at all well.

If that sounds like a hyperbolic reaction to the yawning red state, blue state divide, so be it. It’s prompted by the picture that President-elect Donald J. Trump painted the other day of what would happen if he achieved his goal of appointing enough Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe v. Wade.
