U.S. officials have opened an investigation after a female diplomat faced a barrage of anti-abortion text messages from an advocacy group, disrupting a major UN summit on women's rights.

Koki Muli Grignon, Kenya's deputy ambassador to the UN, received about 3,000 anti-abortion text messages in 12 languages during meetings at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in March.

Britain’s international development secretary has promised to stand firm in her support for abortion rights in the face of growing opposition.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Canadian embassy on Monday, Penny Mordaunt said: “Leadership means not shying away from issues like safe abortion when the evidence shows us these services will save women’s lives.”

The Trump administration’s latest attempt to derail women’s reproductive health and rights at the United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is nothing short of an assault against human rights and democracy.

CSW is the U.N.’s largest gathering of women’s rights advocates, with the purpose of evaluating how well governments are doing on establishing gender equality and promoting policies to advance women worldwide. Yet the Trump administration has chosen this global meeting to form an international coalition that aims to restrict access to sexual and reproductive health—particularly abortion—and to promote traditional family values.
