Syndicates operating illegal backyard abortion “clinics” are using knitting needles, spoons, dishwashing liquid, dangerous pills and assorted concoctions to terminate pregnancies of young, vulnerable and scared women.

An abortion is the medical process of ending a pregnancy so that it does not result in the birth of a baby. Some of these terminations fail, thereby posing serious health risks to those that attempt to abort.

The Klaten Police arrested five people last Friday for allegedly running an online abortion clinic in Ceper, Klaten, Central Java.

The suspects were identified as Agung Nugroho and his wife, Anisa Puspitasari, as well as Ariyanti, a local midwife. Agung and Anis allegedly offered abortion services on a LINE messaging app under the handle Nindira. The police also arrested Dian Arisa and Yoga Janu, a couple who allegedly used the clinic’s service.

On the evening of August 2, 2015, a woman with username "aifa2500" posted on an online forum in the Philippines. She had gotten an abortion a day prior, from a backstreet abortionist she referred to as "Miss Shine."

In broken English, she explained that she had gone for her procedure to abort her 6-month-old fetus. Upon arrival, she explained she was made to go to the toilet to pee, before being asked to remove her pants and underwear because “she's going to put the catheter to push the baby out.”

During a recent rally, New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon held up a wire coat hanger as a warning that we should not return to the previous generation’s means of obtaining illicit abortions. And Representative Lois Frankel, a Democrat from Florida, banged a coat hanger on the table at a briefing while discussing the latest Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

According to the UNICEF, global maternal mortality ratio declined by 44 per cent between 1990 to 2015 but it remains unacceptably high in sub-Saharan Africa. The region accounted for 62% (179 000) of global maternity-related deaths in 2013. One of the major complications that account for nearly 75% of all maternal deaths is unsafe abortions (WHO).

It is a topic that provokes much emotion from both sides of the debate and like all ethical debates, the grey areas are more common than the clear cut, black and white answers. The practical implications of the hesitance to discuss this topic gives way to misinformation. Misinformation in the medical field is akin to walking blindfolded through a jungle. One wrong step can put one in danger.

Here in Malaysia, the social stigma of abortion encourages people to seek help in secrecy. In this environment, predatory opportunists seek to make money off desperate people and when things go wrong, the victims have nobody to turn to.

Abortion providers in France are mobilising to retain Cytotec for abortion (or an affordable substitute). The decision to withdraw Cytotec from the market in France following complaints that it had caused problems for several women who had been given too high a dose to induce labour has led to an outcry among those who support universal access to safe abortion in France, such as the National Association of Clinics for Abortion and Contraception and the French National College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists.

The group REIVOC, which consists of all the abortion providers in the Occitanie Region in France, including GPs, gynaecologists, midwives, and family planning advocates, called the decision hypocritical: “Cytotec is indispensible for inducing abortion. While there is an alternative, Gymiso, it is 40 times more expensive. Everyone knows Cytotec is used for abortion even if that is not one of its approved indications. Instead of withdrawing it, it is urgent that a generic substitute is found.”

The law states that a pregnant woman who "with intent to procure her own miscarriage, unlawfully administers to herself any poison or other noxious thing or unlawfully uses any instrument or other means whatsoever with the like intent is liable to four years in prison."

Two persons, including one claiming to be a son of former Sen. Ramon Revilla Sr., were arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) on Monday for bringing into the country P24 million worth of abortifacient drugs, Radyo Inquirer reported.

The two identified as Ruben Bautista, who claimed to be a son of Revilla, and Glenn More Gaddi, came from Singapore and were reportedly arrested by Bureau of Customs (BOC) authorities at the airport.
