Ministers approve home use of both stages of abortion pill due to Covid-19

The government has given temporary approval of the home as a class of place where both abortion pills can be taken for early medical abortion, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It has also approved the home of a registered doctor as a class of place where both abortion pills – mifepristone and misoprostol – can be prescribed for the treatment of early medical abortion.

The Department of Health says reported changes to the abortion law, that would allow women to take both pills at home during the coronavirus outbreak, are not going ahead.
A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson told The Independent: “This was published in error. There will be no changes to abortion regulations.”

Women should be allowed to take abortion pills from the comfort of their own home and without seeing a doctor face-to-face, leading doctors have said.
As part a new report titled “Better for Women”, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has called on the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to reconsider its guidelines regarding medical abortions.

The Department of Health and Social Care published statistics today which show the number of abortions carried out in England and Wales is at its highest level.
There were 200,608 abortions in 2018, an increase of 4% on the previous year.
Overall, abortion rates have increased in the last decade for all women over the age of 25. Less than half (48%) of abortions were to women who had already had one or more previous births.

Women in England are to be allowed to take the second abortion pill at home, giving them the same rights as their counterparts in Scotland and Wales.
The UK government announced on Saturday that it would legalise the home use of early medical abortion drugs by the end of the year. It comes after pressure from campaigners for England to follow in the footsteps of Scotland, which last year became the first part of the UK to introduce the option, and Wales, which announced its own plans in June.
Dignity clause incorporated into Abortion Reform Bill

A late alteration to the Abortion Reform Bill was added last week, to ensure any remains are treated with dignity.
Legislative Council last week approved the bill. Numerous, mainly technical, amendments were approved, while attempts by Bishop Peter Eagles to impose new restrictions were unsuccessful.
Abortion Bill: Zones banning protestors set to become law

Provisions that will ban protestors from approaching patients and medics in ’access zones’ have been added to the bill.
Ralph Peake (Douglas North) succeeded in getting backing for the new clauses that will enable the creation of ’access zones’ around the hospital, centres offering abortion services and the homes of medical staff. Some, mainly technical, amendments were approved.
Under the new provision, anti-abortion protestors will face prosecution if they target vulnerable women or staff in such access zones.
