Senators fire up in tense abortion debate
Senators have locked horns in a fiery debate over changes to Queensland's abortion laws.

A Nationals senator has been branded a disgrace for a controversial push to condemn the Queensland government's proposed abortion laws. Queensland senator Barry O'Sullivan sparked a tense debate in parliament on Monday over changes to his state's abortion laws.

Under the state government's move to decriminalise abortion in Queensland, women would be able to ask to terminate pregnancies up to 22 weeks.

Senator's 'cruel' abortion motion defeated

A crossbench senator has been labelled cruel and insensitive over his push to condemn abortion safe zones in NSW.

Katter's Australian Party senator Fraser Anning said NSW had followed the "socialist state" of Victoria by passing laws to provide 150 metre safe zones outside abortion clinics to prevent abuse and harassment.

His Senate motion condemning NSW parliament for passing the bill was defeated 34-17, with government senators given a conscience vote.
