Facebook Ireland to investigate ads on ‘abortion pill reversal’

Three such adverts appeared on the platform here reaching ‘up to’ three million people

Facebook Ireland has said it will investigate claims of ads posted to promote controversial abortion pill “reversal” procedures.

The social media company’s ad library recently showed records of 92 such ads in the US which, according to its own analytics, were viewed by users up to 18.4 million times since January, 2020.

Campaigners against abortion have criticised the Minister for Health for issuing new service guidelines due to the Covid-19 emergency.

Currently, services for termination in early pregnancy require a medical practitioner to examine a pregnant woman before coming to the reasonable opinion that her pregnancy has not exceeded 12 weeks.

Dr Aoife Mullally, an obstetrician at the Coombe hospital in Dublin, has been appointed HSE clinical lead for abortion, a year after the service was introduced.

Dr Mullally’s main task in the part-time post will be to ensure the roll out of termination of pregnancy in more maternity units, and in GP surgeries and other community settings.

Together for Yes claims ‘at least two women a day in Ireland are taking an abortion pill in secrecy’

Together for Yes campaign, which supports repeal of the Eighth Amendment, has called for regulation of abortion pills in Ireland as figures show a 190 per cent increase in their use last year.

The figures are from one of two main online providers, Women Help Women, which also indicated that at least two women a day in Ireland were taking abortion pills illegally in the secrecy of their homes.
