IN A SMALL town in Donegal close to the border with Derry there is an abandoned building that was once a mother-and-baby home called the Castle.

The boarded-up house is visible from the road, set back from high gates in an overgrown field.

This institution where ‘unmarried mothers’ were sent is not part of some distant past. It only closed in 2006.

It has been more than a year since the landslide vote for abortion rights in Ireland, yet last weekend hundreds of people were once more marching through the streets of Dublin, chanting: “Get your rosaries off our ovaries!” “It’s nonsense, what are they marching for?” a guard standing on the road outside the National maternity hospital asked a colleague on a motorbike – referring to the 2018 referendum in which the Irish public voted overwhelmingly to repeal the law prohibiting abortion. The answer is that, while the law may have changed, many people are still struggling to access abortions in Ireland due to a lack of provision, the time restrictions on terminations, the illegal activities of anti-abortion campaigners – and an enduring legacy of shame.

An anti-abortion activist has insisted that a new website he has launched is not covered by a High Court injunction secured against him for a separate site which was alleged to be confusingly similar to the official HSE crisis pregnancy service offering.

The site, myabortionchoices.com, is similar in design and content to another site run by Eamonn Murphy, which was the subject of the injunction sought by the health service last week.

An anti-abortion activist has been warned he could end up in jail if he does not comply with a court order to take down a website with a similar name to the HSE's 'My Options' unplanned pregnancy advice service.

The HSE secured the High Court order against Eamonn Murphy after alleging his website was misleading members of the public into thinking it provided objective counselling and information services.

Anti-abortion activist faces legal action over new website

An anti-abortion activist is facing a legal challenge from a British abortion provider after he set up a website using a similar name.

Eamonn Murphy, who runs an unregulated Dublin crisis pregnancy agency which has given out misleading advice, had already been sent a cease and desist letter by the HSE after setting up a website under the same name as the official My Options crisis pregnancy phone line.

Anti-abortion activists have struck back against Ireland’s introduction of abortion services by picketing a clinic and by launching potentially misleading websites that mimic the state’s support service for unplanned pregnancies.

A group holding placards protested outside a doctor’s office in Galway on Thursday in an effort to deter women from seeking abortion pills just three days after abortion services became legal.
