Targeted ads, fake websites, and digital dossiers form a range of technologies used by organisations opposed to abortions

Anti-abortion groups are using “geo-fencing” technology to target ads towards women inside abortion clinics, a new report has found.

The technology creates a virtual boundary around an area that will trigger a response when a mobile phone enters or leaves an area.

Just 126 of the 253 GPs who have so far signed up to provide medical abortions are allowing their names to be released to women who ring up the 'My Options' freephone information line.

If a GP allows their name to be released as part of the information line directory it means that women inquiring about abortion may be able to choose who is the most convenient to attend.

While the abortion debate continues worldwide, even in countries where it has long been legal, new drugs and online telemedicine services could provide access to safe abortion beyond borders and laws.

Since the early days of the birth-control movement, scientific research and development have contributed significantly to increase the range of options available for managing human fertility and giving women autonomy over their own bodies. One of the most remarkable changes in recent years is medical abortion, a non-surgical method for terminating pregnancies. It involves the use of prescription drugs such as Misoprostol and Mifepristone (also known as RU-486), which was developed in France and approved for use in 1989.
