Nepal – Contraceptives shortage looms

Government cites lack of funds. Fears of unsafe abortions, increase in maternal deaths.

Health facilities nationwide could soon run out of contraceptives such as condoms, pills, implants and emergency pills as the Ministry of Health and Population lacks funds to procure them.

Officials blamed the reduction in the health budget as the main reason for their inability to purchase essential contraceptives to be distributed from health care facilities. A possible shortage of the items will eventually cause multiple problems including a rise in unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions and maternal deaths.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — When President Donald J. Trump scrapped tens of millions of dollars in aid to women’s health care providers around the world four years ago, the Family Planning Association of Nepal was forced to dismiss more than 200 people and close clinics in at least four parts of the country, one of Asia’s poorest.

Family planning education and birth-control distribution slowed or stopped in Nepal, which relies heavily on American financial assistance for public health programs. While abortion is legal in the country, the options for safe procedures were abruptly narrowed.

Makwanpur: 18pc women abort babies last fiscal

Almost 18 percent of the pregnant women in Makwanpur district underwent abortion in the last fiscal year, according to the District Public Health Office (DPHO).

Around 2,062 of the 11,649 pregnant women in the district were found aborting their foetus, and the number could be even higher as many undergo abortion illegally, an official at the DPHO said.

Last week, governments and private partners gathered in London for the 2017 Family Planning Summit. The goal: to evaluate progress toward commitments to improve healthcare for more than 120 million women worldwide from 2012-2020.

More than half-way to 2020, only 30 million women have been reached. At a time when activities need to be sped up, the United States, the leading bilateral funder of family planning worldwide, just pulled out billions of dollars from organisations serving the world’s poorest nations, claiming they funded abortion services.

Donald Trump's decision to block US funding for abortion services around the world could result in tens of thousands of women dying, with the decline of these services leading to millions of unsafe abortions in developing countries, aid organisations have warned.

Mr Trump signed an executive order reinstating a ban — known as the Mexico City Policy — which prohibits the US giving federal family planning funding to international health groups that provide abortion care. Shortly afterwards, the President's press secretary Sean Spicer said Mr Trump was “standing up for all Americans - including the unborn”.

But the policy is likely to hugely increase the rate of abortion in developing countries, causing the deaths of an estimated more than 21,000 women.
