The primary aim of World Contraception Day is to raise awareness about contraception, promote safe and accessible family planning methods, and advocate for reproductive health and rights worldwide. The day highlights the importance of contraceptive options in achieving broader societal goals related to health, gender equality, and sustainable development.

Ghana Health Service to incorporate family planning methods into NHIS package

The Ghana Health Service intends to incorporate Family Planning Methods into the National Health Insurance Package. The service is also working to Institutionalize Comprehensive Abortion Care in both Public and Private Facilities. These are part of measures to prevent Maternal Mortalities and Disabilities in the country’s health facilities.

The Director of Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kofi Issa at the launch of Zero Tolerance for Preventable Maternal Deaths and Disabilities in Accra, noted that most complications including deaths recorded at health facilities were from unsafe abortions.

On 23 January 2017, United States President Donald Trump issued an expansion of the Mexico City Policy, or “global gag rule” (GGR), last implemented under George W Bush. The GGR blocks US global health assistance to any foreign nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) that perform abortions, except in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the life of the woman; provide counselling on, or referrals for, abortion; or lobby for the liberalisation of abortion law. This stance is enforced even if the NGOs use non-US funds for these aspects of healthcare.

She Decides — a global women’s rights movement, of which we’re both members — was a direct response to the reinstatement of the GGR and its devastating effect on the lives and freedoms of women and girls. We are, therefore, encouraged by early indications that president-elect Joe Biden is expected to rescind this devastating rule as one of the new administration’s first acts.

The effective use of modern contraception such as; Intrauterine devices, (IUDs) implants, injectables, oral pills amongst others are said to be the safest methods of birth control.

In teenagers, pregnancies are at greater risk of poor outcomes, hence a comprehensive sex education and access to modern contraception would decrease the rate of unwanted pregnancies in this age group.

As a personal principle to update myself about what is happening around the world, I visit different news portals every morning. So, it was in fulfilment of this daily ritual that on September 21, this year, I came across an article published on the Daily Post’s news portal headlined: “Nigerian women committed 2.7m abortions in 2017 – Study.”

In the article, it was reported that majority of the abortions were done by young girls in secondary schools and women in their early 20s, and that one out of every four of the abortions was unintended, leading to an increase in the abortions committed by the women.

True autonomy comes with deep understanding of your options, your risks and your benefits. Therefore, one can never be autonomous without education on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Sadly, that’s exactly what we have witnessed among medical students from Uganda.
