Irish minister reveals 26 county abortion figures

The Irish health minister has said 3,265 women travelled from the Republic of Ireland to the UK for abortions in 2016.

Simon Harris provided a county breakdown of the figures during a debate on the 8th amendment.

Based on his figures County Dublin saw the most women (1,175) make the journey, while County Monaghan had the least with only 15.

Abortion is a reality for women living in Ireland and is an issue that is not going to go away, Minister for Health Simon Harris has said.

“Ultimately, there is always a deeply personal, private story behind each individual case which I believe is a matter for a woman and her doctor. I believe the Irish people trust women and they trust doctors to make these difficult decisions.”

SINN Féin is facing potential rebellion in its in ranks following the decision to liberalise the party’s abortion policy.

On Saturday, in the wake of an at times heated debate over an ard chomhairle-backed motion, delegates at the ard fheis voted to support a policy that extends access to terminations.

Sinn Féin’s political opponents often describe the party as a cult but, on one issue at least, it is just like all other parties: views among members on abortion are divided, from top to bottom.

Unlike Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, however, Sinn Féin will adopt a policy on abortion at its ardfheis this weekend, and all TDs will have to toe the party line, no matter what they personally believe.

Sinn Féin’s executive body is to table a motion at the party ardfheis later this month recommitting to a policy of allowing abortion in the case of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality ahead of next year’s referendum.

It is expected to be one of a number of motions on abortion at the event in Dublin’s RDS, and whatever is decided will settle party policy ahead of the referendum.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said his personal view is that it should be a woman’s right to choose whether to have an abortion.

The party has faced criticism from pro-choice activists for supporting a rights-based agenda in the Stormont talks but only extending its support for abortion reform in the cases or rape and fatal foetal abnormalities, which leads to views it only supports the rights of “worthy women”.
