Today marks the day when Ireland’s new abortion service gets under way in earnest, with the first women likely to receive their medication in GP surgeries around the State.

With legislation requiring that at least three days elapse between a consultation with a doctor and a termination, a woman who visited a GP surgery that reopened last Wednesday, January 2nd, would have been due to take mifepristone, a drug that stops the pregnancy, on Saturday.

LONDON, Jan 3 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Women seeking abortions in Ireland may not get comprehensive care as health services struggle to meet demand for the fast-tracked launch of the service, a national group representing family doctors said on Thursday.

Ireland lifted tight restrictions on abortion from January 1, but fewer than 200 family doctors – about 5 percent of the total – .

GPs, who have opted in to providing terminations, say they are aware of about 20 women from across the country who sought terminations on the first working day of the service on Wednesday.

Ireland has introduced its first abortion services today following a 2018 referendum decision to liberalise the country's ban on terminating pregnancies.

Laws were quickly passed following the referendum to ensure that as of midnight on Tuesday, the country's national health service was able to offer terminations free of charge.

The 162 doctors signed up to provide abortion services in the State will “be enough” to ensure that women do not have to go abroad to terminate a pregnancy after January 1st, Minister for Health Simon Harris has said.

An uneven geographic spread of services will be available from Tuesday, when GPs can begin prescribing the abortion pill to women up to nine weeks into a pregnancy and hospitals can provide terminations up to 12 weeks. However, there are two counties where no GP has signed up to the service.

GPs have been told to inform every woman who is about to have a medical abortion that it has a failure rate and that unrestricted termination cannot be provided beyond 12 weeks of pregnancy.

The advice is outlined in a set of interim guidelines issued to GPs by the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) in advance of the wider availability of abortion, due to come into effect on January 1.

About a quarter of general practitioners who signed up to provide abortion services have not yet agreed to have their name made available for a new helpline. However, the majority – 75 per cent – of GPs who have signed up have said they are satisfied to do so.

The helpline will provide information to women when they call looking for guidance on where to access abortion care.

'Growing number' of GPs sign up for abortion service

The HSE is getting a "steady return" of contracts from GPs applying to provide a medical abortion service from January, it was claimed yesterday.

A HSE spokeswoman said the "number is increasing on a daily basis".

It is still unclear how many GPs will be ready to deliver the service from the start of next month, but potentially several hundred may have signed up.

The Coombe Hospital will not be ready to provide abortion services by the start of January, according to the Master of the hospital, Dr Sharon Sheehan.

Speaking on RTÉ's News at One, Dr Sheehan said she would advise Minister for Health Simon Harris to delay the introduction of services until February or March.
