Clinton warns of political forces in Canada trying to turn back the clock

“I would predict that you’re going to have some… forces in your own country that are trying to figure out whether they can tinker with the clock and maybe turn it back a little,” Clinton told the Liberal convention on Friday.

Former U.S. secretary of state Hillary Clinton warned Liberal convention attendees on Friday that the same sort of conservative forces that rolled back the clock on abortion rights are trying to do the same in Canada.

Clinton, who was the Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, made the remarks during an armchair discussion with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland at the Shaw Centre in downtown Ottawa.

California: What constitutional law experts say about the abortion ballot measure

BY MELODY GUTIERREZ
OCT. 14, 2022

SACRAMENTO —  With favorable polls and a pile of cash on hand, supporters of the California ballot measure to add abortion rights directly into the state Constitution have enjoyed an easy road in this election thus far. Gov. Gavin Newsom is using at least $2 million of his own campaign funds to air ads supporting Proposition 1, and supporters featured Hillary Clinton on a panel Thursday discussing the importance of further solidifying California’s abortion rights.

But the smooth sailing would end if it’s passed, the small and underdog opposition campaign is promising ahead of the Nov. 8 election.

How Anti-Abortion Politics Swallowed Up the GOP

Over the years, anti-abortion activists became certain that campaign finance laws were the enemy.

BY MARY ZIEGLER

The American anti-abortion movement contributed far more to the rise of Donald Trump and the transformation of the GOP than we often think. Scholars have traced how an ascendant form of Christian nationalism—the belief that the United States was and always should be a Christian nation—was needed for Donald Trump to edge out Hillary Clinton in 2016. But the influence of the anti-abortion movement went much further, and it had everything to do with money in U.S. politics.

Political scientists and historians of the religious right have told part of the story of the fascinating partnership between abortion foes and Republican leaders. Their studies often suggest that while pro-lifers became dependent on the GOP, the Republican Party did not fundamentally change its priorities. Some assert that the GOP co-opted the religious right, gaining its votes while offering little but speeches in return.

Abortion Politics, Money and the Reshaping of the G.O.P.

In “Dollars for Life,” Mary Ziegler argues that, over the course of decades, the anti-abortion movement laid the groundwork for an insurgent candidate like Donald Trump.

DOLLARS FOR LIFE: The Anti-Abortion Movement and the Fall of the Republican Establishment, By Mary Ziegler. 318 pages. Yale University Press. $35.

The upheavals of the last few years have been so relentless that it can be hard to recall just how weird the partnership was: Donald J. Trump and social conservatives, an odd couple for the ages. As the legal historian Mary Ziegler writes in “Dollars for Life,” the start of the 2016 election cycle had evangelicals extremely worried. Hillary Clinton — whose possible presidency they deemed “catastrophic” — was running on what Ziegler calls “arguably the most pro-choice platform in history.” Could a “foul-mouthed real estate mogul” really turn out to be “the savior they were looking for”?

USA – Dear Politicians, Put ‘Safe, Legal, and Rare’ in the Dustbin

I'm asking pro-choice politicians to evolve from this outdated mantra—it's no longer serving you. It never served those of us who have abortions.

One thing I love about reproductive justice and other radical movements is the ability to evolve. We’re humans—evolution is natural and how we’ve survived. As organizers and political leaders, we have to evolve, learn from our past, and recognize when our good intentions fell short. But in order to do so, we have to shift our perspective and let go of things that no longer serve us.

Today, I am asking pro-choice politicians to evolve and let go of “safe, legal, and rare.” It is no longer serving you, and it never served those of us who have abortions. Let it go.

There Was Finally A Debate Question About Abortion Last Night

With hundreds of new abortion restrictions introduced this year in state legislatures, constant court battles over extreme abortion bans, and Roe v. Wade hanging in the balance, it was long overdue that a Democratic debate would address reproductive rights. Last night during the fourth Democratic presidential primary debate, it finally happened, and (unsurprisingly) it took a female moderator to get the ball rolling: CNN’s Erin Burnett asked Sen. Kamala Harris what she would do to keep states from enacting laws like the one in Ohio banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, a time when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant. This also gave the other candidates an opportunity to discuss their own proposals.

Abortion, maternal mortality, and other issues that disproportionately affect women were front and center at the debate.

“Democrats have been talking about the pay gap for decades,” moderator Savannah Guthrie asked at the first Democratic presidential debate on Wednesday. “What would do you to ensure that women are paid fairly in this country?”

The question, and its answers, set a tone. Issues affecting women — as well as people of all genders who become pregnant — were front and center at the debate.

USA – This One Question Always Trips Up Pro-Choice Politicians

This One Question Always Trips Up Pro-Choice Politicians
Allow me to help.

The interviews and town halls of a presidential campaign cycle can be mind-numbingly predictable. It’s usually easy enough for politicians and their teams to guess what issues will be on the table and prepare some responses in advance. At best, candidates will deliver cogent and/or inspiring arguments that will generate headlines and motivate voters. At worst, they’ll give boring, canned-sounding answers that won’t hurt them at the polls.

Bernie Sanders’ statement on abortion rights at a Fox News town hall on Monday night hit neither of those marks. Instead, he spewed forth a misinformed, ill-prepared sound bite that validated a dangerous set of lies about abortion care. Conservative news outlets are eating it up, using Sanders’ response to argue that left-wing politicians support a medical procedure that does not actually exist.

Inside a US abortion clinic

Inside a US abortion clinic

Ten women walk along a busy, fluorescent-lit corridor. Undressed from the waist down, they wear big white sheets, knotted over their hips, as they make their way to the "relaxation room", a windowless space, equipped with large sofas and a TV. There they wait, mostly in silence, for their turn to have an abortion.

This is Hope Medical Group for Women, a small abortion clinic in the US city of Shreveport serving an ever-expanding 200-mile radius through rural Louisiana and all the way to Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi.
