Campaigners have launched a new drive calling on people to make sure they are registered to vote in the upcoming abortion referendum.

The 'Together for Yes' group is highlighting the "critical role" young people have to play in the campaign.

The group said there are some 466,000 people between the ages of 18-25 who are eligible to vote in Ireland - provided they are registered before the deadline on May 8th.

Pro-choice campaigners have a serious message in their fight for reproductive rights. But a group of expats in Berlin is aiming to provide some light relief on the issue of abortion by inviting people to party together.

The Berlin-Ireland Pro Choice Solidarity group is trying to remove the stigma of abortion, raise funds for women in need and highlight the upcoming Irish referendum on abortion laws at the fundraiser on Friday April 6th.

Irish men and women living abroad are rushing to book tickets home to vote in the country’s highly-anticipated referendum on abortion rights after the government announced on Wednesday that it will be held on May 25.

The referendum on whether to repeal a constitutional amendment from 1983 that effectively bans terminations does not allow postal votes from outside of Ireland, and requires returning voters not to have lived outside of Ireland for more than 18 months.

Up to 40,000 Irish citizens living abroad are being urged to return home to cast crucial votes in a historic referendum in May that could overturn the country’s ban on abortion. A campaign, Home to Vote, is calling on the Irish diaspora in the UK, Europe, north America and elsewhere to book flights and ferries to Ireland to exercise their democratic right.

Three years ago thousands of Irish citizens returned home to vote on same-sex marriage legislation, boosting the remarkable two-thirds majority for changing the law. Campaigners now hope to repeat the feat.

As the month of the Irish abortion referendum draws closer, a new campaign is encouraging people to make the journey home to Ireland to cast their ballot.

At the beginning of the year, the Irish government announced that it would hold a vote on repealing the Eighth Amendment by the end of May. The controversial legislation gives an unborn fetus the same right to life as a mother and effectively prohibits abortion unless the pregnancy is life-threatening to the woman. In 2016, the United Nations declared that the ban on abortion was illegal and inhumane.

As Ireland prepares to hold a May referendum on the Irish constitution’s anti-abortion amendment, the youth vote is front and centre of the debate – and young activists on both sides are gearing up for a fight.

A previous national referendum in 1983 approved the Irish constitution’s Eighth Amendment, which recognised an unborn child’s right to life. Women who have an abortion in Ireland can face up to 14 years in prison – leading thousands of women each year to seek to terminate their pregnancies in England and Wales.

Irish people living around the world have pledged to return home to vote in favour of ending the country’s near-total ban on abortion in a historic referendum in May.

Irish living as far away as the US and Qatar took to social media on Wednesday to share their plans under the hashtag #HomeToVote, a campaign launched by the London-Irish Abortion Rights Campaign.

Recent emigrants are being encouraged to travel back to Ireland to vote in the upcoming referendum on abortion.

The London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign estimates that more than 40,000 Irish citizens living abroad could be eligible to vote in the referendum, and have created a new “Home to Vote” website (hometovote.com) to inform them of their rights and encourage them to vote if they are eligible.
