Inside Harare’s ghastly abortion ‘clinics’ …60 000 illegal terminations a year

Syndicates operating illegal backyard abortion “clinics” are using knitting needles, spoons, dishwashing liquid, dangerous pills and assorted concoctions to terminate pregnancies of young, vulnerable and scared women.

An abortion is the medical process of ending a pregnancy so that it does not result in the birth of a baby. Some of these terminations fail, thereby posing serious health risks to those that attempt to abort.

Nigeria – A tragedy of choice!

A tragedy of choice!

Abortion! I’d almost forgotten that such a word exists until last Thursday. The gist was that a former neighbour’s teenage daughter died last week due to complications from an illegal abortion. No sooner had I walked into my regular salon in the area, did my hair dresser, wearing a forlorn face ask if I had stopped at Mummy Seni’s house. I said no and asked why. “Did something happen to her?

“So you have not heard. Jumoke, Mummy Seni’s daughter is dead oh!!

South Africa – Illegal abortion clinics on the increase in both townships and suburbs

Illegal abortion clinics on the increase in both townships and suburbs

19 January 2019

It is a constitutional right in South Africa for women to demand for an abortion to be performed on them should they chose to, from as early as the age of twelve years. They can present themselves to a public facility, demanding for one, and it will be conducted without having to get consent from a parent.

However we have health practitioners who will refuse to perform abortion on the basis of their conscious, which is unacceptable. This results in people opting for a backyard abortion which places one's health at high risk.

BOTSWANA – In Botswana it is easier to have a back street abortion than to be treated for flu at Princes Marina Hospital

For Pula 800 and a click of the mouse, Batswana women who wish to terminate unwanted pregnancies can have their wishes fulfilled in a few hours while influenza patients are still queuing to see a doctor, according to Sunday Standard investigations.

The right of women to terminate a pregnancy in Botswana has been the subject of political, medical, social and legal debate, but 18 years later it remains a criminal offence unless it is permitted under the Penal Code 1991, which permits abortion up to 16 weeks of pregnancy on grounds of rape, defilement or incest; if the pregnancy puts the life of the woman at risk or may cause harm to her physical or mental health; or the fetus would suffer or later develop physical or mental abnormality.

In Kenya, one in every four women has had an abortion. Another study shows that of the women who had severe complications after abortions, 45 per cent were teenagers.

The estimates comprise those reported within the healthcare system, so the number could be much higher. An estimated 2,600 women die from unsafe abortions annually. This works out to an estimated seven women and girls dying every day, making unsafe abortions one of the major causes of maternal deaths in Kenya today.

In a dark, nondescript room, the walls caked in spots and smears whose origins she would rather not think about, a young girl sits wringing her hands, waiting for the woman she had been told could help her. She takes one deep breath after another, telling herself it will be okay, there is no other option, she has to be there.

Eventually the door slowly starts to open, bathing the room in light that does nothing other than illuminate the dilapidated hospital bed in the corner.

“You, lie over there!”

In a competitive environment, how you present yourself to customers determines your business survival. And that's exactly what 'Dr Gift', despite advertising an illegal service - which he called legal - did.

I was taking a walk in the city centre when I came across a bold advert on A4 size paper. It stood out from the other black and white adverts because it was written in red, capital letters. The poster proclaims how 'Dr Gift' provides "legal abortion and free cleaning".
