One in four pregnancies ends in abortion in England and Wales

More than one in four pregnancies now end in abortion as more older women opt for terminations, figures show.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said
that the share of women who choose abortion is now more than a quarter for the
first time as the number rose for the second year in a row.

UK – The number of abortions in Staffordshire during the pandemic

Experts believe the increase is partly because of changes to the law

During the year Covid-19 first arrived in the UK, bringing dramatic changes to daily life, there were 2,660 abortions carried out in Staffordshire.

That was up from 2,653 in 2019 and the highest ever recorded in the area, according to figures from the Department of Health and Social Care.

Number of Northern Ireland women choosing abortion rises dramatically

The numbers of women from Northern Ireland choosing to terminate their pregnancies has dramatically increased since the procedure was made legal last year.

As of June 11, the Department of Health had received 1,624 notifications of termination, despite the lack of a full and formal commissioning of the service here.

The report shows the vast majority of abortions were carried out in early pregnancies

A total of 6,577 abortions were carried out last year, which is a slight decrease on the first year of the service 2019, official Government figures show.

In 2020, the vast majority of terminations – 6,455 – were carried out in early pregnancies of less than 12 weeks, according to the notification report.

Increase put down to women being able to seek treatment at home and financial uncertainty

A record number of women in England and Wales had an abortion last year, with the rise particularly among women aged 30 and over.

A total of 209,917 abortions were reported in 2020, with the numbers rising year on year and up from 207,384 in 2019. The largest increases in abortion rates by age were among women aged 30 to 34 with a rise from 16.5 per 1,000 in 2010 to 21.9 in 2020.

Cambodia – As stigma wanes, abortions rise

More Cambodians have openly accepted the idea of safe abortion despite the social stigma women are facing, according to Marie Stopes Cambodia, an organisation that promotes women’s health.

The prevalence of abortion increased significantly among women between the ages of 15-49 from five percent in 2010 to seven percent in 2014, based on the Cambodia Demographic Health Survey.

Uganda to conduct a study on abortion rates
Findings will highlight deficiencies in safe abortion and post-abortion care services.

KAMPALA - Uganda is participating in cross-country studies on abortion and post-abortion care in Africa and Asia. Researchers seek to find out women’s knowledge of abortion methods and sources, the incidence of induced abortion, how women terminate pregnancies, and the extent of unsafe abortion.

In addition to direct questions on abortion, the female survey module includes questions about the respondents’ two closest friends and their experiences with abortion.
