Imagine a world without the stigma surrounding abortion. Abortion would be recognized as health care. People would not be deprived of their right to make their own reproductive decisions. Abortion providers would not be isolated or face physical threats on their lives.

A world free of abortion stigma is the vision driving the work of the International Network for the Reduction of Abortion Discrimination and Stigma (inroads), a network and global community of practice that grew out of a 2013 meeting on abortion stigma co-convened by Ipas and Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH). Inroads was launched following that meeting, with Ipas serving as its host and providing operational support. Today inroads is a network of scholars, advocates, health providers and donors representing 1,500 members and 105 countries.

Busting Abortion Stigma with inroads

Last week I entered a beautiful, stigma-free world: where people have access to legal, safe, and free abortions, where your economic situation, nationality, gender, disability, race, religion or age don’t limit your access to healthcare, where you don’t have to justify your decision to continue or end a pregnancy, where having the right to make your own decisions over your body is a given, where your emotions and feelings are taken seriously, and where diversity is celebrated. This world was the inroads Global Gathering, which took place in Zagreb from the 12th to 16th of March 2018.

I was invited to the inroads Global Gathering to present YouAct’s work on stigma busting through the ‘Speak My Language’ Project: two toolkits that explain abortion stigma with a focus on Eastern Europe and show how storytelling can be an incredibly empowering and effective tool to bust stigma.

Inroads: the International Network for the Reduction of Abortion Discrimination and Stigma is a global network of advocates, scholars, health providers, and donors interested in program design, research, and advocacy to address abortion stigma and its negative outcomes. One of the things Inroads does is to provide a forum for conversations between members.

During a week in June 2017, one of their conversation threads focused on how they share stories of personal testimony. Inroads members also shared a great collection of resources which you may find useful:

– From The Sea Change Program and Renee Bracey Sherman, guides for how to support storytellers and how storytellers can best prepare themselves to be more public: Saying Abortion Aloud: Research and Recommendations for Sharing your Abortion Story Publically and Saying Abortion Aloud: Research and Recommendations for Organisations on How to Support Abortion Storytellers
