The World Health Organisation is to teach Irish doctors and examine their beliefs about abortion.
The initiative, to help prepare them for providing legal terminations from next month, comes as the Department of Health asked the HSE to make sure abortion services would be available in all 19 maternity hospitals from January.

There were heated exchanges as TDs debated proposed changes to the State’s abortion legislation on Wednesday but Minister for Health Simon Harris has not yet accepted any of the 145 amendments considered.
The Oireachtas Health Committee concluded its second day of debate on the 180 proposed amendments to the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Bill 2018.

The Department of Health is to meet medical colleges including the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Physicians, and the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to discuss clinical protocols to deliver an abortion service, a spokeswoman for the Irish Medical Organisation has said. It is the largest medical representative body and trade union in Ireland.
It was “important that medical professionals can, on a conscientious basis, choose not to deliver this service,” she said.

Simon Harris, the health minister, will join on Saturday a March for Choice, the first since the referendum in May, when voters supported an end to the ban.

Doctors have expressed concerns that they will not be able to implement the Government’s plan to roll out GP-led abortion services from its intended start date in January.
Representatives from the Irish College of General Practitioners and the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists raised doubts at the Oireachtas health committee about being able to implement guidelines and provide abortion services by the Government’s proposed start-date early next year.

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of General Practitioners (NAGP) have held an emergency meeting to discuss the outcome of the Eighth Amendment referendum, and passed motions calling for an “opt-in” provision for doctors to provide abortion services.
The NAGP have also called for a conscientious objection provision to be inserted into any legislation passed by government in the wake of the referendum result.

GPs warn of potential errors with abortion scans service

Ultrasound machines used by GPs to examine women seeking a medical abortion need to be reliable, otherwise there is a risk of a reading error similar to mistakes made by CervicalCheck, a leading GP has warned.
Dr John O'Brien, president of the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), said the provision of ultrasound machines used to date a pregnancy is one of the many areas that must be worked out before services to provide abortion up to 12 weeks of pregnancy are ready.
