NIGERIA – Workshop identifies harmful impacts of Global Gag Rule on developing nations

Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, a facilitator at an Ipas-organised workshop for journalists, says the US Global Gag Rule (GGR) has the potential to increase the rate of unsafe abortions in Nigeria and other developing nations across the world.

Akiyode-Afolabi’s said this on Thursday, while delivering a lecture on the “Exceptions in the GGR and its implications for Women and Girls in Nigeria” at a three-day workshop in Owerri.

Nigeria – Rape cases: Using reproductive health advocacy to stem the tide

In the wake of incessant cases of rape across the country, experts in reproductive health and rights have urged Nigerian media to embark on enlightenment campaign that will address high death rates arising from unsafe abortions.

The call was made recently at a three-day media capacity building workshop on women’s reproductive health and rights.

Nigeria urged to review abortion laws

Experts have called for a review of the restrictive abortion laws in Nigeria to protect women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Hundreds of Nigerian women die every day of complications arising from unsafe abortions, an international NGO, Ipas, says.

Country Director of Ipas (Nigeria), Mr Lucky Palmer, said this on Sunday at a three-day “Media Training for Journalists on Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights/Global Gag Rule’’, in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

‘COVID-19 May Increase Unintended Pregnancies, Unsafe Abortion’

Speaking during a webinar organised by the Network of Reproductive Health Journalists, Nigeria recently to commemorate this year’s World Population Day, the experts said the COVID-19 lockdown prevented many women and girls from accessing family planning services.

Sharing his thoughts, the former Country Director, Ipas Nigeria, Dr. Ejike Oji, said some women who became pregnant during the lockdown and have had the number of children of their choice, would resort to unsafe abortion, adding that young girls caught up in the same scenario may end up with unsafe abortion.

No fewer than 2,000 Nigerian women die of unsafe abortion annually with Northeast recording highest rate, says Dr Christopher Lamai, Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Lamai made the disclosure at the capacity building workshop for journalist on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (WSRHR) organized by Ipas Nigeria, an international NGO on Tuesday in Gombe.

The leadership of IPAS who made this known at a training workshop organized for media practitioners on capacity building on Women’s Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights, said 67.000 women die annually from unsafe abortion in the country.

A non-governmental organisation, Ipas Nigeria, has said the country loses no fewer than 10, 000 women annually as a result of unsafe abortions.

The Country Director, Hauwa Shekarau, who made this disclosure on Friday at a three-day event on capacity building for media practitioners on women’s sexual reproductive health and rights in Gombe State, called for a robust advocacy to reduce unsafe abortions in the country.

A body made up of journalists, the Network of Reproductive Health Journalists of Nigeria (NRHJN), a key advocacy stakeholder has called on government and other stakeholders to join hands in closing the wide gap of access to all forms of modern method of contraception.

In a press statement to mark the World Contraception Day 2018, the network said the promotion of safe, accessible modern family planning methods at this point in time in Nigeria, is therefore very crucial towards achieving the global goal of Family Planning by 2020 (FP2020) and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
