The HSE has said that “service demand remains within the predicted limits” in relation to abortion services.

THERE ARE 10 maternity units providing abortion services out of a total of 19 units across the country, over three months after Ireland’s abortion laws have been legalised.

The HSE has said that nine maternity units had provided abortion services from the start of this year, and that one additional maternity unit had since begun to offer the service.

Hospitals in the south of the country were still awaiting “the promised staffing and resources” needed to provide abortion a day before the service was introduced.

John Higgins said providing abortion will be challenging.

A memo from John Higgins, clinical director of the maternity directorate of the South/Southwest hospital group (SSWHG), to all staff on December 31, outlined the group’s position regarding the provision of the service.

It reads: “While we currently await the promised staffing and resources we intend to provide the following services [outlined below] from the 1 January 2019.”

What (Taoiseach) Irish PM Leo Varadkar called a "quiet revolution", had culminated with a day when the Eighth Amendment was repealed.

Irish Health Minister Simon Harris hailed the passing of the legislation as a "new era for Irish women".

Only nine out of 19 maternity units will be in a position to offer abortion services by the planned introduction date of January 1st, it has emerged.

Sources also said that while 145 GPs signed the contract to provide abortion services to their patients, just 106 doctors had signed up to provide termination of pregnancy services to any woman seeking access to the abortion pill.
