THE Irish Pharmacy Union is calling on the Government to make contraception more accessible by offering more over the counter solutions for those seeking birth control. It follows the recent expansion of the free contraception scheme for young women between 17 and 30.

While the organisation welcomed the move, representatives are still urging the government to make it easier and faster for young women to avail of the scheme.

Pharmacists want all women in Ireland to be able to access contraception free of charge and without prescription.

It comes after the UK recently allowed contraceptive pills - two specific progesterone-based oral contraceptives - to be sold over the counter for the first time.

Rise in seizures of abortion pills ‘shows need to enact vote’

The number of abortion pills seized by the Health and Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has risen by 57% in the last year.

Figures released by the HPRA show that 644 pills were confiscated between January and September. Some 409 pills were seized during the same period last year, and the total for 2017 was 487.

The Department of Health is to meet medical colleges including the Irish College of General Practitioners, the Royal College of Physicians, and the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to discuss clinical protocols to deliver an abortion service, a spokeswoman for the Irish Medical Organisation has said. It is the largest medical representative body and trade union in Ireland.

It was “important that medical professionals can, on a conscientious basis, choose not to deliver this service,” she said.

A public list of GPs who are registered to provide medical abortions may be necessary to ensure women looking for a termination are not left confused about where to get the service, it emerged yesterday.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar reiterated that while GPs can have a conscientious objection to providing medical abortions, they will be ethically obliged to refer a woman to a doctor who is participating in the scheme.
