Norma McCorvey, most notable for being the plaintiff known as Jane Roe in the 1973 landmark supreme court case Roe v Wade that led to abortion becoming legal in the United States, made a stunning admission just before her death in 2017, it has emerged.

“This is my deathbed confession,” she explained.

USA – Jane Roe’s Deathbed Confession: Anti-Abortion Conversion ‘All an Act’ Paid for by the Christian Right

Jane Roe’s Deathbed Confession: Anti-Abortion Conversion ‘All an Act’ Paid for by the Christian Right
The new FX documentary “AKA Jane Roe,” out May 22, contains a shocking revelation: Roe (of “Roe v. Wade” fame) played the part of an anti-abortion crusader in exchange for money.

In its final 20 minutes, the documentary film AKA Jane Roe delivers quite the blow to conservatives who have weaponized the story of Jane Roe herself—real name, Norma McCorvey—to argue that people with uteruses should have to carry any and all pregnancies to term.

McCorvey, who died in 2017, became Jane Roe when, as a young homeless woman, she was unable to get a legal or safe abortion in the state of Texas. Her willingness to lend her experience to the legal case for abortion led to the passing of Roe v. Wade in 1973, which legalized abortions in all 50 states (though red states do all they can to get around this; recently, several have even used the COVID-19 pandemic to make abortions functionally impossible to procure). But conservatives had a field day in the mid-‘90s when the assertive, media-savvy pro-choice advocate and activist McCorvey became an anti-abortion born-again ex-gay Christian with the help of leaders of the evangelical Christian right, Reverend Flip Benham (of the infamous Operation Rescue) and Reverend Rob Schenck. A conservative film, Roe v. Wade, starring Jon Voight and Stacey Dash, will dramatize McCorvey’s “conversion.”

USA – The woman behind ‘Roe vs. Wade’ didn’t change her mind on abortion. She was paid

When Norma McCorvey, the anonymous plaintiff in the landmark Roe vs. Wade case, came out against abortion in 1995, it stunned the world and represented a huge symbolic victory for abortion opponents: “Jane Roe” had gone to the other side. For the remainder of her life, McCorvey worked to overturn the law that bore her name.

But it was all a lie, McCorvey says in a documentary filmed in the months before her death in 2017, claiming she only did it because she was paid by antiabortion groups including Operation Rescue.

(CNN)A federal judge ruled Monday that the Trump administration could not obstruct two undocumented pregnant teens in US custody from seeking abortions.

In her order, US District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan required the administration to allow the two teens to be transported to an abortion provider "in order to obtain any pregnancy related or abortion-related medical care and to obtain the abortion procedure itself."

Women’s bodies are under attack: The alarming reality of reproductive rights in India and the US

Women’s bodies are under attack: The alarming reality of reproductive rights in India and the US

Outside, the mid-morning heat is stifling. It’s not humid like the bustling metropolises of Mumbai or Kolkata; here in New Delhi, it’s a dry heat, the type of heat that exhausts you, made worse by a thick layer of dust which sticks to your face and stings your eyes.

At the maternity ward inside the hospital at Jamia Hamdard University, all the metal gurneys are taken, some with sheets, some without.

‘I decide’: Jane Roe and the struggle for autonomy

"I wasn’t the wrong person to become Jane Roe, I wasn’t the right person to become Jane Roe. I was just the person who became Jane Roe, of Roe v Wade.’ (I Am Roe: My Life, Roe v Wade, and Freedom of Choice, by Norma McCorvey and Andy Meisler, 1994.)

On 18 February, Norma Leah McCorvey – better known as Jane Roe of the landmark US Supreme Court case Roe v Wade – died in Katy, Texas at the age of 69. During her life McCorvey was both a symbol of perseverance and a target of derision for many people. Those who once hailed her wound up deriding her, and vice versa: she was patient zero of the modern pro-choice movement, though she later became one of the most forceful voices of the anti-choice opposition. She was a bisexual in a committed relationship who later became a born-again Christian denouncing her sexuality, and who later still became a Catholic eschewing her born-again identity. She was written off as a naive tool of more powerful forces, slandered by former associates as a money-hungry opportunist, and hailed as an advocate par excellence by those on the left and right of the political spectrum.

Farewell Jane Roe, complicated champion of abortion rights

Farewell Jane Roe, complicated champion of abortion rights
by Rosemary McLeod
February 23 2017

OPINION: It was Jane Roe's fate to be the fragile basis on which American women won abortion rights back in 1973. When she died this week her attitude to that had gone full circle, delightful ammunition for opponents of women's rights, though no great surprise in itself. She was human, after all, which is to say full of contradictions.

Her real name was Norma McCorvey, a solo mother of two children when she got pregnant a third time. She said she had been raped, which would have made the process of getting an abortion easier, but was a bad liar, wavered in her account, and was caught out. Finally, while her case, now famous as Roe vs Wade, progressed to the United States Supreme Court for a final decision based in part on her right to privacy, she carried the child to term and gave birth to it.

Norma McCorvey, Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide, dies at 69

Norma McCorvey, who was 22, unwed, mired in addiction and poverty, and desperate for a way out of an unwanted pregnancy when she became Jane Roe, the pseudonymous plaintiff in the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to an abortion, died Feb. 18 at an assisted-living facility in Katy, Tex. She was 69.

U.S.: Telling the story behind Roe v Wade: ‘The play illuminates choice’

As Roe, a stage production centered on the landmark abortion case of the 1970s, hits Washington DC, playwright Lisa Loomer discusses its prescience

David Smith in Washington (The Guardian)

In a normal election year, without the dozens of distractions, it would have been a jaw-dropping moment. “Do you want to see the court overturn Roe v Wade?” Donald Trump was asked during the final presidential debate. His initial answer meandered but then became blunt: “That’ll happen automatically, in my opinion, because I am putting pro-life justices on the [supreme] court.”

He went on to accuse his opponent, Hillary Clinton, of advocating that babies be ripped out of their mother’s wombs just before birth, a bogus claim she dismissed as “scare rhetoric”. But come election day, he won and she lost.

Now Trump is bound for the White House and a stage play about Roe v Wade, the 1973 case at the supreme court that firmly established a woman’s right to abortion, is arriving in Washington DC, with remarkable prescience. The first night curtain will go up just 40 hours before the bellicose billionaire is sworn in as US president.
