Health Committee hearing on abortion bill amendments

The Oireachtas Select Committee on Health has concluded its first day of deliberation over amendments to the Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy Bill.

The Committee has concluded ten sections out of 26 sections, in which there are 180 amendments.

So far the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has not accepted any changes in the legislation.

The Minister for Health has introduced the Regulation of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill in the Dáil, which seeks to legalise abortion services in Ireland.

Simon Harris said legislators in the national parliament hold a privileged position, especially when acting on the instruction of the people in a referendum.

Independents4Change TD Clare Daly became emotional in the Dáil on Tuesday as she described the abortion referendum result as “an enormous weight being lifted”.

In an impassioned speech which received a round of applause from TDs, Ms Daly said it was a “ball and chain that dogged us all our adult life being finally gone”.
