Former taoiseach John Bruton has said doctors opposed to abortion should not be forced to refer women seeking terminations to other physicians.

Mr Bruton, in a speech to the Pro Life Education dinner in the Clayton Hotel, Dublin, on Saturday night, said he feared anti-abortion doctors would be “targeted” by those who wanted to “catch them out”.

Abortion legislation to come before Dáil within weeks, says Harris

Legislation that will pave the way for the introduction of abortion in Ireland will be brought to the Dáil in a matter of weeks.

However, Minister for Health Simon Harris has warned against reopening the referendum debate after former Taoiseach John Bruton said the proposed legislation needs to be amended.

Mr Harris confirmed today that the Bill is being finalised.

The Masters of two of Ireland's main maternity hospitals have said they have "major concerns" about women procuring abortion pills online to terminate their pregnancies.

Speaking at a joint press conference to call for a 'Yes' vote in Friday's referendum, Dr Rhona Mahony of the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street and Professor Fergal Malone of the Rotunda Hospital expressed concerns about the health implications for women who take abortion pills.
