In my earliest years as a health activist, I would often ask Joseph Karanja, a seasoned obstetrician gynecologist from University of Nairobi, if I could attend his practicum training for nurses and clinical officers.

Prof Karanja indulged my curiosity most times and allowed me, a lawyer with no medical background, to quietly sit at the back and observe. He was generous with his knowledge, and I was given my own sample pawpaw or watermelon to cut for demonstrations.

Rose Otieno was seated behind her desk at the clinic flipping through a newspaper when a familiar face on the obituary section caught her attention. As she read through the obituary, details of the familiar face became clearer. “The picture on the obituary wasn’t anything close to the face she wore the last time I saw Elizabeth,” recounted Otieno.

Otieno, a healthcare service provider, said Elizabeth (second name withheld to save family members from embarrassment) had walked into her clinic two weeks earlier, explaining that she wanted to terminate her eight-week pregnancy.

Safe abortion issue takes centre stage in High Court

A five-judge bench convened yesterday to hear arguments in a suit calling for the government to reinstate guidelines on safe abortions.

Joseph Karanja, a leading obstetrician and gynaecologist, urged the High Court to compel the government to reinstate the guidelines.

He said it will save the lives of women who are at risk from illegal, botched abortions.
