Last year’s most notable decision affecting gender justice – the overturning of federal protection of the right to abortion in the US – happened more than 6,000 miles from Africa, but its impact was felt here too.

The US Supreme Court’s decision will affect legal, policy and public service spheres on the African continent. It will also intensify the ideological war to control women’s bodies and push LGBTIQ citizens further to the margins.

It is no small feat—in places where it is illegal to terminate a pregnancy, unsafe abortions cause about 30,000 deaths each year, and numerous health complications.

KAMPALA, UGANDA — When Irene hands her granddaughter a piece of bread, the six-year-old grins widely.

That smile never appears when the child’s mother is around, Irene says. “Sometimes, I feel like she senses that she is a mawemuko.”

In the Luganda language, the word “mawemuko” refers to a child conceived from incest.

At the end of July last year, Jowelia Nankya, a resident of Kyaliwajala, a Kampala suburb, got a 17-year-old maid from Serere district in Eastern Uganda.

She quickly noticed that the maid was sluggish and tended to sleep a lot. Nankya also noticed that their stock of sanitary towels, which she kept in the bathroom cabinet and their toilet roll got used up very fast.

One Margaret, 26, is among many Ugandan women who are at risk of suffering severe complications arising from unsafe abortion.

Margaret, a resident of Kazo Angola zone in Kampala, recently told The Observer that she almost died while terminating her pregnancy using local herbs. She was forced to come to Kawempe General hospital for proper care.

The mother of one says her second pregnancy came about after being raped late one night as she returned home from work. So, she decided to carry out an abortion.
