Hundreds of pro-life advocates take to Wellington's streets in opposition of abortion reform

Several pro-life organisations have joined forces to ensure their voices are heard when it comes to the hot-button topic of abortion.

Organised by five groups, the March for Life – touted as a counter-protest to this a similar pro-choice event earlier in the week – drew a large crowd to Wellington's Te Ngākau Civic Square on Saturday.

A doctor who performs abortions in Christchurch says she's "disturbed" people are illegally importing abortion medicine.

Last year, 39 "kits" containing abortion medicines mifepristone and/or misoprostol were seized at the border, according to regulator Medsafe. The pills induce miscarriage and are used for early medical abortions for women up to 10 weeks pregnant.

Certifying consultant and abortion provider Dr Pippa Mackay said she was concerned to hear about people importing abortion providing pills they had bought online, when abortions were safe and accessible in New Zealand.

Abortion watchdog wants changes to the law but says nobody is listening

The Abortion watchdog says it hasn't had a Justice Minister consult with it for years despite pleas for law changes.

It's been at least three years since the Abortion Supervisory Committee (ASC) was spoken to - the last time was when former National MP Chester Borrows was associate justice minister in October 2014.
